i m in the market for a desktop. Is this a hot deal?

Only thing a bit lacking is the 1.8 ghz processor, but if you just need a basic computer for Office or Web/Email .. this would be a pretty good deal at the price.

BTW, You get the Windows 7 upgrade also.

It is a quad core processor - I don't think that is a weak link really.

Edit: Point being that CPU clock speed alone does not mean that much.

Actually, Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 Wolfdale 3.33GHz would beat this in almost every application benchmark.

Most software do not take advantage of the quad core, only specialized software for certain industry will be able put those extra cores to good use.

While you're correct about the E8600 kicking the crap out of this, almost every application will make decent to very good use of a quad core. Some limited apps are rather single or dual threaded, but they're becoming more and more rare.

However I'd recommend this machine instead. Much faster cpu, bigger hard drive, slightly weaker graphics but thats solvable for $20, $10 cheaper at $399. Also free ship and no tax for many.

I have also been comparing the Acer Aspire M5700 with this Gateway. I like the CPU and hard drive in the Acer. However, the Gateway has HDMI output which I like to have. I would have to replace the video card in the Acer and that will cost at least $50.

Windows Vista Home Premium...
Upgrade?

yes.... acer offer free upgrade to win 7

looks like the BB Quad also qualifies for the free Win 7 upgrade. site says you can order the discs from the manufacturer or pay the Geeks $40 to install it for you with any other system upgrades and give you a copy of the Win 7 discs when you pick up the PC.

Not really.

This computer is really slow. I bought the same one from J&R for $330 a few months ago. Still waiting for the Win 7 disc so I can upgrade. I think it's the Vista dragging it down. Found out last week the keyboard is no longer working on a lot of the buttons..... It's still an upgrade from my P4 2.8 but not by much right now until Win 7.
