I just got this email from Hotwire travel ticker. Certain dates are as low as $29.00 each way. For me in Chicago to go to Miami (where my daughter is) I got a round trip ticket for 93 and some change with taxes. There were many dates to choose from.
my sister in law flies it every time she comes up to boston from the carolinas. in general her experiences have been pretty good. i'd fly spirit if i weren't independently wealthy with my own private jet. oh, right, guess i'm booking on spirit this afternoon.

I have flown from Atlantic City to Tampa many times. On time, clean. Be careful with bags...the extras add up fast.

I have flown Spirit airlines twice now. The leg space in the economy class is definitely less than on other airlines. The interior wasn't clean but it wasn't horrible either. The pilots are good. Nice, smooth take-off, flight and landing. However, beware. On international flights you could be bumped to another flight a lot more than on other airlines. If you are not on time, they have a pretty stiff change fee and they are not willing to be reasonable, so be there early and don't wait till the last minute. Their customer service is not that good.
If you can live with those expectations, then their prices are all the better. I guess it all depends on how much you want to save.

I flew Spirit from Chicago to Mrytle Beach this past summer. In Chicago, they share gates with Delta so you didn't know you were actually at the correct gate when you arrive. There wasn't much signage to identify it as Spirit gate. Overall the fight was good and planes seemed to be newer. I believe they were Airbus, which offer a little more room for my big butt.
We were taking my 6mth old son with us and had to pay an extra $30 each way to make sure we were sitting by my son (he had his own ticket to gurantee him a seat). They nickel and dime you on board too, even charging up to $3 for any beverages.
We carried all our bags on which was a real pain on the way down, however, on the way back they let us check our bags at the gate before boarding to speed up boarding. I believe it was over $25/per bag each way had we choosen to check them.
I guess the key to Spirit is that you get what you pay for. If you just need a quick way to get from point A to point B, deals can be had. However, if you are planning a big family vacation, those extras can start to add up and Southwest might be a better alternative.

Doesn't sound any different than american airlines except that sodas are free, but beers are $5.
My gf and a friend flew down to Lima, Peru on Spirit. Pros: They only paid $125. I paid $400 for my flight on LAN. Cons: A few weeks before the flight left, they were sent a brisk email telling them that their flight had been changed to a week later. Just like that. They were able to arrange their time off accordingly, but missed a connecting flight to Arequipa. Spirit's attitude was: too bad.
By the way, I highly recommend AirFareWatchDog.com You can sign up for a daily newsletter listing all the flight deals out of your city. Pretty great.

I used to travel on Spirit Airlines from New York to Orlando a lot when they had direct flights (usually around $90 round trip) but then they ended the direct flights and started nickel and diming so I haven't been back in a few years. If it is a direct flight and you're not planning on bringing checked baggage then it is a good deal... otherwise other airlines are better... saving a couple of bucks on an airline where extras end up costing you more than it would have on another airline is not worth the hassle later on IMO.

American has about the same fare all the time from FLL/SJO, roundtrip it is about the sama as AA, $130ish. It's higher from MIA and DFW, but FLL is much cheaper on American.

When did American start flying FLL -> SJO? They used to only do MIA -> SJO along with Taca, and Spirit used to be the only one doing FLL -> SJO
lol, looks like its been that way for 2 years now - http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-166185370.html
Dang, we need to stop driving to miami for that trip.
Sprit was crappy every time we've flown it, so we pay the extra and stick with American or Taca. (jet blue flys it from Orlando now as well).
Once you add in even a single bag per person and a drink or two on the flight, your up to almost as much as a real carrier.

I've flown over a dozen round-trips between Las Vegas and Detroit via Spirit. Hands down the best deal for travelers like myself. I only want the airfare, so all the extras that Spirit charges for are irrelevant. I don't need to assign a seat, I generally don't need to check a bag, I can last 4 hours without a beverage, and therefore save the nearly $100 all that could/would have cost. I have flown for as little as $26.50 AFTER taxes and fees ROUND TRIP. No joke, I saved the receipt to prove it to non-believers. Never a complaint with the plane, the crew, the schedule.
These deals are very common on Spirit. You just have to be fortunate to be leaving from and going to a Spirit destination, and hit the dates right. Sign up for their email and you'll get one or two of these deals per week for specific dates/days in the future.
Spirit does these promotions practically weekly, hang out in the Travel forum a while. Many times flight are a lot less that $29, the problem usually is getting both ways at the same rate - the dates of availability rarely work out.
As far as Spirit Air as an airline - I fly a couple of dozen times a year, on many different airline, Spitit is the only one I refuse to patronize (well maybe SW too). I have had two very bad experiences with them and they are not getting a chance at a third srike. Some of the most horrible customer service possible and usually very understaffed at the front and gate end of the airport.

I agree completely. And I forgot to mention they are very understaffed in my last post. The only way I will ever fly with them is if I earn enough miles for a free flight or get one of those $9 fares. Otherwise, I will be taking my business to a more reliable, customer-friendly airline.

Best way to take advantage of Spirit's specials is to join the Free Spirit club for $40. Two days after I joined, I got a promotional email that got me an $8 fare direct to Fort Lauderdale from DC. Even after adding taxes, 2 bags, and 4 seat selections, the fare was only $198 for two people, round trip. Only one person needs to join the club and anyone flight with him/her gets the same deal.
