A friend has this and is really pleased with it.

3 HDMI inputs and 3 component inputs is pretty decent and Free Shipping on mine (though tax applied).

You need to add it to the cart to see the Promo. price.

Maximum 2 per person.

Decent receiver for an OK price, but it is a 2 year old model.

And tell me what has changed in the last two years that this model doesn't have (given the price)? It's not a laptop where to years is a lifetime!

Dobly TrueHD and dts Master Audio. These are the new "lossless" audio formats supported on the newest hi def DVDs.

These are probably the most critical, mainstream "leading edge" AV receiver features at the moment. If you are shopping for a 7.1 receiver in this price range, it would be a mistake to get one without these formats, unless you plan to change receivers again within a couple of years.

The Sony DH800 supports these formats, and can be had for similar money.

I have this receiver - it's wonderful. I paid 349 shipped a couple of years back for mine.

It's irrelevant that it doesn't decode TrueHD and DTS-MA, since any Blu-ray player or comparable source will decode those formats and send them as multichannel PCM over HDMI, which this receiver receives just fine.

This receiver does a great job of transcoding all video inputs of all types to a single HDMI output, without introducing any crappy processing.

The DH800 has a nice feature set, but will NOT transcode video inputs.

thanks for the advice! I've been reading a lot about receivers lately trying to get up to speed as I'd like to buy a new one soon. My Kenwood is 12 years old and still sounds fine so I'm not sure I really need to. Any everyone is always talking about Onkyo around here but the heat issue really bothers me... How does Sony rate compared to other brands of receivers?

That works fine, as long as you get all your programming content from the Blu Ray player. LAN/WAN digital content...you're out of luck if the receivers don't have TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. Admittedly, for many people, 7.1 + Blu Ray player is fine for the lossless audio, assuming HDMI connections. But to buy a "new 7.1" receiver and leave those features out of the mix? To each his own.
