I would agree that the OP's two selected deals are warm. But after getting an external 1TB with SATA and usb for <$60 during the year and seeing 1.5Tb (internals) can regularly be had around the $100 mark I conclude that black friday is not hot anymore. Fingers crossed for cybermonday...

Largest supported size is 1 TB, but you'll need to use MFSLive to hack it first. Easier to replace the internal drive, if you haven't already done that.

If others think something is missing, they should try to provide it rather than threadcrapping and whining. You can always break the case and use it internally. These prices are cheaper than your average internal prices. It should be noted, however, that you may end up with a drive without a warranty in that situation.

Trust me, I've taken apart 50+ externals over the last couple of years and no matter what brand of HDD was inside (Seagate, Maxtor(yuck!), Hitachi, Samsung, Western Digital), they always checked out as full warranty drives.
Think of it as getting a free external enclosure, like with the recent 2TB black case Calvary deal on Newegg. 2TB Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 drives inside with full 3 year warranties and a decent eSATA/USB enclosure for about the same price as the bare drive alone on Dell (after tax) = WIN!

It may have worked out for your previous 50 drives, but there's no guarantee.

OfficeMax has the 500GB Seagate 2.5" FreeAgent Go portable for $59.99. I'm not sure if it's in-store only or online also. It's not an early bird item though.

Not all external HDs are 5400 RPM, although most are. Odds are, if it doesn't say "7200 RPM" prominently, then you can assume it's 5400. But external 7200s certainly do exist (I have one).

That is a generic statement. I have been using an IOmega for the last 3 years ( external power version) and havent found any issues till date . I have been handling it rough .. So to a large extend it is upto how you use and how lucky you are .. The rest happens with every HD
