IMO the HP is better because it has an I7 and not c2Q

i7 is a Core 2 Quad too, right?

What bothered me was that I heard tons of things about HP about motherboard problems...

And the other one being an ASUS, which imho is like a very good brand...

Anyway, thanks for the thought...

Different micro-arquitectures. Core 2 Quad has the "core" microarquitecture, while the i7 has the Nehalem microarchitecture. Clock by Clock, Nehalem has a 15% to 20% advantage in speed. The Asus is a 2Ghz quad and the HP is a 1.6Ghz Quad, thereby the Asus has about a 20% clockspeed advantage which negates the Nehalem architectural advantage. In essence both will perform about the same, but if given a choice, I'd go core i7 provided that all other specs are about the same. Though in this case I see the Asus has more memory and a better video card.

I'd stay away from HP like a plague, google hplies. I am one of the affected laptop owner who got nothing but a cover story when I called in. Newegg, on the other hand, I only had good services from. Although their prices tend to be a bit higher.

Bit inaccurate. i7 can overclock up to 2.8 ghz so the i7 is actually faster even at 1.6 ghz...

Basically
I7 > Quad Core
Asus build laptops > HP

The i7 also has hyper threading for a total of 8 logical cores.

we use 95% HP for our business and i've never had to do more than 3 emails (diagnostics) to get a part overnighted under warranty.

also the Dell Studio 15 with i7 is $999, add 1080 screen for $75. only available with radeon 4570 512MB

Guess you are lucky.
Because I never had anything but trouble with HP in past and stopped ordering from them few years ago.
Then I took the bait and ordered dv8t 3 weeks ago. Still waiting for it even though credit card was charged instantly.
Shipping date was moved twice already. Took me 6 emails to find out order status and the conversation is not over yet. And every email HP sends is about 2 pages of meaningless info. Yes, every simple 2-liner sent to them generates 2 pages of junk in response.
Will give them until BF then pull the plug if nothing happens

What I don't like about both of them - screen resolution. 1366x768 is too low for their size.

I just purchased this laptop from GentechPC. It's the best deal on high end laptop that I've found. Besides, Asus has the best warranty out there! A free 1-year accidental damage warranty! You'll pay hundreds extra just for the warranty that you get for free from Asus.

This is a great computer. I bought my Asus G51j from J&R (for $1349 before another $67.45 from Bing CB!)but they have since bumped up the price to $1499. After a little searching though I found another deal from Compsource for $1,404 – $28.08 (BCB) = $1,375.92

My guess, almost every retailer selling this computer will have it on back-order. I ordered while it was out of stock at J&R and it took a week or so to come back into stock & then get delivered - which was no big deal. I would imagine most retailers are facing the same time constraints.

FWIW!
