I found this Yard Machine Snow Thrower Model 31AM2N1B729 at one of my local HD for $359. Item number is 301-872; however, online price is $429 and not all store carry it. Only one of my two local stores carry it therefore the YMMV. My local store (60007) still has 5 more in stock. Menards has a similar model selling for around $429 too. My brother-in-law bought one at Menards at the end of last season when it was on sale and he said it works well. It has a bigger engine than the cheaper model and does not need to mix gas with oil. It also has electric start. I use Lowes 10% mover coupon to get the final price. Good luck finding one.

Moved to Central IL last summer and thinking about picking up a snow thrower. What's the difference between single stage and double stage -- is there a triple stage? Any other advice etc from people who own similar equipment?

Single stage uses the auger to break up the snow and push it through the chute all in one operation. Two stage has another rotator at the back of the auger to push the snow through the chute so it should work better but it depends on the machine. There is no triple stage as far as I know. Hope this help.

If you get a lot of snow you want the two stage. Particularly heavy wet snow.

Thanks OP. Got one. I think these are really old stock. The warranty card had a "sweepstakes" entry form from 2005 that expired in 2007. Anyway, its brand new and works perfectly. The equivalent Sears model is $479 and the Menards model as you said is $429.
