They announced this drive on September 1 but it's only now making it to retail. Finally some competition for the Seagate 7200.4 500GB. Specs look good.
Those 7200.4 are having lots of reliability issues too. Toshiba's 500gb 7200rpm drive is slated to arrive very soon too. I've been using Hitachi Travelstar drives since the 7k100 without a hitch. Laptop manufacturers really need to equip their machines with 7200rpm drives.
My question is whether or not it is a single platter (I only buy single platter drives). Normally it is on the datasheet but I must be missing it.
edit: nevermind, this answers my question "The 250GB per platter one- and two-disk models deliver up to 56% higher capacity and 16% better application performance than its predecessor."
Just another option out there: The recently released WD Scorpio Blue 640GB (5400RPM) can be had for as little as $90 (eBay+bing CB). That's a fantastic deal on the largest capacity standard height drive currently available, if you're willing to trade a little bit of seek time for the battery life savings of the slower speed.
Not to crap on the OPs deal, which is a good one. I just ended up going in this direction after considering the Hitachi also.

Thanks mwdelta. It is a good option, but I was more interested in getting the main drive for the HP 8730w ordered from the recent TigerDirect deal. I had posted this deal for the benefit of others who were able to snag that one.
It is a mobile workstation, and needs all the RPM on the main drive that it can get

As long as your notebook uses a 2.5" SATA hard drive, you will have no issues. (Older notebooks might be using the IDE interface and this drive will not be of any use to those)

back in the days we had to deal with height issues. Don't know if that's still the case.
thanks op - this will go great with the copy of windows 7 ultimate i won from neweggs sweepstakes promotion!
although - they claim itll take about 4 weeks to receive the o/s...

500gb HD height should be ok with most laptops - it's when you get to the newer, high capacity notebook hard drives that might not fit (I think they are 12.5mm vs. the normal 9.5mm height). Of course some newer larger laptops come with double sized HD sockets, so you can put even the new form factor drives in them. I know my Gateway FX Pseries, Qosmio F55-502 series and my Asus G51j all have double height sockets. My Gateway and Asus can actually handle 1 larger drive or 2 separate regular sized 9.5mm drives as well. FWIW
Me too. This will replace the Hitachi 160G in my Toshiba Tecra A9 which has the 1.5MBb/s interface. I hope with the addition RPM I will still get more performance. Does anyone know if there is a way to select 3.0Gb/s in my Tecra?

Works beautifully thus far, appears to be exactly the same size.just curious what thinkpad is yours? I have the T43 that is screaming for hard drive space but I've been convinced it's IDE drive. Am I wrong? (hopefully)

According to Lenovo, T43 uses IDE drive. Should be easy enough to pop out the drive and see if it have SATA connectors.
