Well, if you look at some of the posts near the end of the thread it appears that a BIOS update (and maybe a motherboard swap) has remedied the issues. Would hate to have to return the PC for a new motherboard but if the BIOS update truly fixes it then that is not a big deal IMHO.

yeah that is the big question, if they actually fix these or just simply resell them as refurb. another related issue is the warranty appears to only be 90 days for these.
their d5200t model doesn't seem to have as many reported problems, I'm too lazy to call, wonder if the following is a BluRay Burner or just DVDRW & BD-ROM
NE504AAR#ABA-CCRV Refurbished HP Pavilion Elite d5200t VHP-64 Core2 QC 2.6GHz 500GB SATA 8GB DDR2 800 BluRay Burner 15-in-1 FireWire Rmkt PC $699.00 $524.25
edit - ok I'm trying to get use to their inventory listing, above doesn't have a video card?
maybe if they start getting a lot, they will change their listings so you can filter like Dell. I'd take a quad, BluRay Burner and decent video - anyone see one for $599.ish?
Why rush into this when so many problems with it I will pass this time. heck puters will always be there, i can not buy it with posts like this one: =================================================
OK, this is too funny.... well, not really, but...
I was just in the middle of responding to this thread, saying that I just received this computer on July 16th, and have already had 4 freeze issues, and guess what? It froze in the middle of typing the message !!!
So, now it's 5. I don't know what caused it this time, although I tried loading a CD into the computer INSTEAD of doing the usual hard shut down and that caused the computer to reboot itself, without me having to do the hard shut down. No error messages appeared, other than the usual "Windows did not shut down properly" message.
So, if anyone finds out, for sure, what is causing this problem, please post it. I'm not liking the fact that my brand new computer is giving me more troubles than the 9 year old computer I just got rid of.

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/154921 That's really FUD. If you look at the report cited it's not exactly credible, and the data they have is screwed up. I certainly don't trust Squaretrade any further than I can throw them when it comes to inspiring consumer confidence on reliability of refurbished items.

While Squaretrade may want to scare you so that they can sell more extended warranties, the finding of that survey is actually consistent with PC World's annual reliability survey and reliability report from RESCUECOM. You can read the PC World article here.
Well I got myself a laptop anyway and it comes with XP Pro loaded and Vista Disk and has free 7 upgrade if I want it.
Old lappy was dying anyway and got a CDSL9300 with 80GB HD. Don't need more than 80GB how I use it and it comes with 2GB RAM which is enough for Word Processing and internet work. I can always go in and upgrade if I feel i need to.
Even if you get a bad MB, I could rip out all the parts and put them together with a nice new MB ( maybe one that can even OC ) and get my money's worth. Just need to find something that will fit in the HP's poorly vented case.

I can bet you rotinoma either owns a HP or works for HP.
The issue with the freezing is the motherboard, and even the motherboard manufacturer seems to confirm that there is a problem but they don't know how to solve it.
People have posted on the SD site that the price is good enough that you can just buy a new, better motherboard later and that the prices for i7 machines are good enough that it's worth it for the components. Does anyone know if any ol' motherboard can fit in the HP case?
Bought a refurb desktop last year from HP - problem after problem. Beware. Bought an extended warranty from SquareDeal because of all the issues I had with the desktop, and it finally wouldn't accept an operating system - and I collected on the warranty. I will never buy an HP refurb again.

I have had bad experiences with refurbished laptop. The last laptop I bought was a refurbished HP laptop from Buy.com for $560. It broke down the second day I received it, had to send it to the service center, and waited 2 weeks for it to get back at me.
That article about the HP laptops yesetrday is bull. The data comes from Squaretrade who is a warranty resale company. Laptops fail more than desktops and much is due to people dropping them and the fact that everything is packed into a small form factor.

Still showing many i7-920 less than $500. Very tempting. Is it a laptop or Desktop ? whats the part number listed on website?
Prices are too good to pass up. Decided to bite on this one. There was one left after I purchased mine:
NY810AAR#ABA-CC14 Refurbished HP Pavilion Elite e9150t VHP-64 i7 920 2.6GHz 750GB SATA 6GB DDR3 1333 DVDRW(LS) NIC WLAN 15-in-1 1GB Rmkt PC
They couldn't tell me which video card it was other than the fact that it was a 1gb card. 10 days to return for any reason from the receive date. 90 day warranty.
jeffH70 said: Most of the freeze seemed related to nVidia video card. I had mine with ATI and runs fine. The only complain I got with the motherboard was it could not adjust the memory speed and therefore the tri-channel Samsung PC-3 10600 runs at 533MHz bus speed (PC-3 8500) instead of its native 667MHz bus speed (PC-3 10600).
Mine has the nVidia 250GTS and so far I still problems free. Yes, HP's MB (ASUS) is very limited in tweaks, however I just returned a refurb Dell XPS435 (because the price) and it was even more limited. Some people are just replacing the MB for a non OEM MB, and this still a worthy option due the HP Outlet low price.
