Not bad....jumping in on one or two. Isn't the drive alone usually ~$90?
$25 coupon makes this a nice Xmas gift...even though I usually prefer giving the WDTV since I know it so well...and it doesn't require a proprietary drive.
Also, how is this w/o HDMI output if it is HD and if it is 1081i......or are those specs available w/ composite cables?

Get the Simpletech 500GB portable hard drive from Staples. It is $69.99, add $5.01 of filler, buy a $25 off $75 coupon from e-junkie.com and get drive for ~$58shipped($2.xx for coupon).

could somebody please comment on this, if I have a PS3 will it essentially perform the same function as far as allowing movies stored on a hard drive to be played on TV without a PC being hooked up also? right now I connect the drive to my lappy which is connected to the TV. don't use PS3 for it but would like to since moving and connecting lappy to TV is a pain each time. i would like a more perm connection. don't care too much about HD or HDMI but the comment about no rear USB is concerning. already ordered this but still time to cancel, or return once it arrives. i am not technically minded so please excuse my potentially dumb questions. and thank you.
the one you mentioned is a 3.5" HD. not comparable to this.

Where did you get the information that the simpletech is 3.5" HD? Mine was delivered yesterday and it's the 2.5" drive. The drive is very quite and generates almost no heat. After I tested the drive last night, I placed the second order for the Simpletech.
people basically pay $30 the crappy player. Not a hot deal for me, but some people may find the player is worth $30 for them.

It would still be useless for me since the Seagate Theater+ doesn't support .ass and .ssa subtitles while the WD HD Player and HD Player Live does. Seagate is behind the times except for the neat docking feature.

I believe it is the NON-+ version. I.E. no HDMI or ethernet port. I personally have a ton of movies I just want to rip to it and stick in my living room so I don't have to jack with any DVDs or movies I've DL'd or anything...

Thanks for posting this. I have a 320GB of this drive already, it's definately portable. In for a 500GB for a present. Staples $25 off $75 makes it a good deal. I added the PNY 2GB Attache USB Flash Drive for 7.99 as filler. Never have enough flash drives with teenagers swiping them from my desk.

well if you can get it with a $25 coupon and a filler the hard drive is not a bad deal:
My order was:
Subtotal:$150.78 Delivery:FREE (to the store) Coupon1:-$50.00 Coupon2:-$25.00 (already had one) Tax:$3.79 (virginia 5%)
Total:$79.57
So $79.57 ÷ 500gb = $.16
The drive alone at Staples is 149.99 149.99 ÷ 500gb = $.30
Just for the drive at Amazon.com it is 99.32 99.32 ÷ 500gb = $.20
The cases are not that hard to open on these drives so I am going to take the 500gb and put it in my laptop. The 160gb from my laptop drive will go in the drive enclosure. The theater and drive will go into my five year old son's playroom. Think of all the dvd's you can rip to a 160gb harddrive. Seems like a great deal to me!

Seems like the $69 is the final price after the $10 instant coupon. Can we still add $20 off $50 or $25 off $75 coupon after the $10 instant coupon?
How do you know this for sure? Apparently there are two models one HD and other non HD. Given the description says HD I would have to assume this is the one that comes with HDMI.
EDIT: going by the description at Staples this is a non HD box...but the picture is of the HD box... another inaccurate description from Staples.

Yes, you can add another coupon. If using the $25 off $75, you have to add a filler of at least $5.01.

The SimpleTech drives are uglier but they are insanely easy to crack open with just your fingernails so they're really useful if you do a lot of drive swapping. The WD ones keep getting tougher to open and I'm worried about whether or not they locked in the seagate one because that's what I ended up getting.
As for the lack of HDMI complaints. It does suck that there's no HDMI on it, but considering most people will be watching downloaded TV shows and lower quality stuff like that then it's a great portable solution and after coupon then $75 is a pretty good deal.
