Some good deals there.

I purchased a shotgun from CDNN a few years ago. They were easy to deal with and shipped it promptly to my local gunshop for transfer.

How good of a deal is the shotgun? I really need to visit some local pawn shops to see what I can get used, but I know nothing about guns.

I just want something cheap for home defense. A friend is trying to talk me into an AR-15, but, those things are pricey.

the charles daly shotgun is a pretty decent deal for 199. dont let your friend talk you into an ar-15 for HD. unless you plan on spending some serious time and energy doing close quarters training, i would strongly suggest against it. realize with an ar-15, your biggest concern is going to be over-penetration (ie: your next door neighbors exterior wall). only thing to consider is that with ordering online, you're not going to be able to see how the gun fits you, and also you're going to have to find a local FFL license holder who will process the transaction, and that can cost you another $10, on up to $50, each FFL license holder has their own fees.

for comparison, budsgunshop.com has the same charles daly shotgun for $253 (but that includes shipping, not ffl fees). depending on how much cdnn charges for shipping, might not be that hot of a deal. buds is the defacto standard for online gun price comparison pretty much.

These are decent deals for sure. But besides appreciating the OP posting this deal, I appreciate people like cavemann who post valuable information to go along with the good deals. One of the many valid points he made was the fact Bud's is where you check first. J&G Sales often has 'great' deals. But add their shipping and other misc charges they stack on, the deals aren't great and most times they're not even good.

Edit: Sorry, not good for guns/ammo

Aside from the expense, an AR-15 for home defense is an expert's gun.

A great solution for your situation would be either the Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 20 gauge youth models sold at WalMart. They go for about $225. These shotguns have 21" barrels and shortened butt stocks, which makes them easy to handle indoors. Don't be fooled by the "youth model" designation. They are perfectly suited for home defense: Handy and potent. You can buy 20ga buckshot shells or heavy (turkey) birdshot at WalMart (although they won't sell you the gun and the ammo in the same store trip). If you ever get a hankering to take to the great outdoors for hunting, with the appropriate ammo, the same gun can be used for anything from birds, to small game, to deer, or to shoot clay pigeons at a skeet range.

The local pawn shops around here typically have beater 12 gauge hunting shotguns for $150 to $200. Unfortunately, in addition to having been around the block a few times, they typically have long (28") bird hunting barrels that make them unwieldy for home defense. Spend a few dollars more, get yourself a new one at WalMart or the local gun shop.

If you find you enjoy shooting the shooting sports, you can contemplate AR-15s and handguns.

Very helpful info rbstern. Thanks!

Are there any air pistols that do not require a license that you would recommend for home defense?

Get a M26 Taser. A pellet gun is not recommended for home defense.

Not sure what you mean by license. That varies dramatically by state. Here in Georgia, we don't need anybody's permission to keep a handgun for defense while at home, work, or in our cars.

Legalities aside, a good home defense handgun recommendation for inexperienced gun owners, or gun owners who will not practice regularly, would be a six shot, 357 magnum revolver (loaded with 38 special ammo) or 38 special revolver, with a 4" barrel.
