Seems like a great deal for someone that wants a light fast computer without sacrificing resolution or performance.

Free upgrade to win7, which would B best to get rid of bloatware.

Actually, the new Intel SU2300 DualCore CPU in this machine has

I'd say, pretty HOT deal at $349 for an Ultralight 14"

yus9 said: I'd say, pretty HOT deal at $349 for an Ultralight 14"Don't let the model name fool you--it's actually 11.6" but runs the same resolution (1366 x 768) as most 15.6" laptops. I agree it's a great deal. If not for the color, I'd definitely pull the trigger.

I didn't really want another netbook after selling my wind. but boy these specs are impressive for such little machine. the main reasons for giving up the wind were resolution and power. I mean a dual core netbook that runs nearly as long as an atom book.

So i jumped on it. Thank you for the heads up.

As for the color it goes well with my nebula red m17x!

i'm pretty sure this page is wrong:

and its actually just ONE core, NOT TWO cores, as thats what I read in some forum that I cant find anymore

If only I lived outside Cali

nope, this is a dual core

Just got same one from j&r today but blue and $400 (no tax or shipping, then + $ 20rebate from bing). This deal works out to be 'exactly' the same (3his deal is 380 w/shipping + tax, but 'forces' you into red--which IS sexy). Also, this is probably the best deal for this size notebook anywhere, even better than the z11 from Dell. One problem is the memory. It's 2 gb installed, but its the slower speed, not 6400. Just take notice of that if you just upgrade 1 module

The su2300 is a dual core celeron that is exactly the same as the su4100 except 1mb less l2 cache, + it has virtulization.

No, su2300 is dual core, BUT the 1410 does come in a single SOLO core option also, so you must be very careful if picking one out on the fly.

"webdoctors" is still correct. The model in the Amazon link is single. The model in the fry's link is dual.

Bought it, couldn't resist.

Yes, I am pretty certain that the Intel (S)U2x00 series is all single-core chips. linky

Single-core chips these days (aside from ones that are purpose-built as single core, like Atom) like the Core 2 Solo series are usually manufactured as a dual-core chip, but are usually chips with one defective core that is disabled. For instance the U2300 is a Merom chip with only 1 core and 1MB cache as opposed to the standard 2 cores and 4MB cache.

Passmark score of 750 proves it is dual core, unless that's an error too

No no. Your link above doesn't even show these SU2x00 chips. As stated multiple times in this thread, the Celeron SU2300 featured in this laptop is definitely dual core, and is based on Penryn. The confusion may stem from Pentium SU2x00 processors which are all single core. The difference is subtle but extremely important and this notebook is sold with both versions, so please be aware of what you're getting.

2 core... intel is stupid for marketing it as celeron because it's penryn based ULV... even if it were single core, which would be the su2700, it's still a phenomenal chip. I have the single core and it's also based of penryn. TDP is 10watts; it smokes atom and feels fast in vista; high battery life (my acer 4810 gets 8hrs+ and w/ the x4500 gpu, it supports DXVA II so 1080p h.264 doesn't even (barely) touch the cpu. i'd get it but no brainer to go with Newegg. with bing, it's cheaper (when you inc. fry tax) and red blows. still deciding between this one and the 1410 netbook in the morning for 189. hmmm....

Where is the 1410 netbook for $189 tomorrow morning? Link?

Tried to order it, but it seems to have a problem processing credit cards...

NVM, just ordered it. It is the color that my wife wanted too...

$405 - 10% Bing CB, $5 shipping at Newegg for all three colors of the SU2300. Great for those of us outside California.

thinking Newegg will drop the shipping + $10 if you talk to them, since Amazon has it (actually J&R via Amazon) for $399 + free shipping. Newegg is usually more kosher about this sort of thing when the spread is low. think I'll go with it then. just can't deal with a netbook that still has xp on it and so bare bones, even if I save $170 with the netbook.

damn... was $299 this morning at Amazon. now I wanna wait for another price drop

edit:nm, that was single core config with home premium. gonna wait anyway and see what happens in the next 6 hrs or so since this won't be a hot tix.

But J&R is only 5% Bing CB... I guess it works for CA?

what do u search for to get 5% bing? Newegg = no bing as of now. I tried JR, J&R, etc., no go. FW is 3%, would be nice to double dip, but I know that won't happen.

?!

http://www.bing.com/shopping/pages/stores.aspx?scope=cashback&FO...

Click on "J", J&R is first.

But you're right, Newegg seems to be gone. It wasn't in the vendor list before, but I found it through a product search on the shopping page. Doesn't come up anymore.

Thanks OP - got one

Got it today. The cooling fan has a humming noise, very annoying. I am not sure whether I should keep it.

My friend got one. The fan is making a very loud whining noise. I see someone else complaining about it. Any one else finding the same thing?

Hork, I think there's a workaround for that, I can't remember for sure but check this page, which also an AIO tweaks page for the 1410!
Acer Aspire 1410/1810t/1810tz Timeline Tweaks (2)

Getting my black 1410 today!

Thanks. I installed the 1810tray utility from the above website. It stops the fan if the cpu temperature is low. Without the utility, the fan is constantly running when it is on AC.

hakujin, is your 1410 making the same humming noise?

I think the fan in my 1410 is defective. I don't know if I should contact Fry's or Acer...

yes, it does. you can also change the fan in power options, at least in windows 7 to not do this. change it from active to passive. but that tray is great! I just installed it!

there's more talk of that fan in a link from that thread that I pointed out. Somebody even did a mod.

With the tray though (or win7), it's definitely workable. I love this little baby!

Anyone have a fan noise issue when you type on the left side of the keyboard? Seems the back of the keyboard hits the fan blades. REALLY annoying.

UPDATE: Returning it. Fry's is sending me another when they get their shipment in a couple of days.

BTW, I tried asking Acer what to do. They were obtuse, so they can deal with Fry's returns.
