I got tired of fighting for internet rates every 6 months and the alternatives suck in my area. I called Charter, said "cancel service" and told them Qwest
DSL has a promotion for $25/month for 7MB DSL. They offered a 2-year contract of 5MB service (10MB for the first 6 months) for $29.99 with a pro-rated $75 Early Termination Fee. There is no $10 fee for not having other Charter services. Not the best deal in the world but if Charter is your best option (e.g. DSL latency sucks and you are a gamer, etc) this is a decent deal and you don't have to think about it for 24 months.

Terms & Conditions

I've been paying $35/month plus some taxes from my last promo so this deal saves me at least $120 over the next 2 years.

Hey thanks. I just called Charter. They offered me the same exact thing. I've never been a customer before.
No brainer for me. Done!

Call and complain about the speed or tell them ATT UVERSE and/or DSL is giving you a better deal, if available in the area which was the case for me. They gave me the 10Mbit down and 2Mbit up for $29.99 with 24 month price guarantee, but its YMMV.

Actually this is what I did, I had AT&T DSL prior to cable
1. Ordered the 19.99 basic package with FREE installation online (It came with a $25 gift card).
2. After the cable installation,(I provided my own modem) called ATT to cancel my DSL and they offered me a better deal.
3. Called Charter back and told them about the deal.
4. They offered me the 5/1MBit deal but refused and asked them to exceed the speed offered by AT&T.
5. They offered me the 10Mbit/2.

Thanks for posting this. I've heard about these commitment plans, but I just never got around to doing it until now.

I leased a modem from them when I first signed up, but I eventually bought my own and turned my old one in. That was 6 years ago. I just got a letter saying they periodically review accounts and according to their records I am leasing my modem, but I'm not being billed for it. So they are giving me notice that the lease fee will be added to my bill. Now I'm having to wait for them to investigate and suss out what happened to the modem I turned in. This is ridiculous!

I called in to get this deal and the CSR was telling me how I could buy a used modem from them for $30 or get a new one for $40 or $50 (can't remember). After 6 years of not billing me you'd think they could just correct their original mistake and change it from lease to own and be done with it. From Charter's point of view they already lost out on over $350 worth of leasing fees, what's another $30 or $40?

Ok I got in on this deal.
Here's some info.
There are no additional fees/taxes unless you are renting their modem (I already own one)
The termination fee applies if you cancel and you are still in an area that services Charter.
Example: You move to a new place and it's not serviced by Charter the termination fee is waived.
Installation is $49 but is waived (you'll need to request this, they offered it to me as long as I pay for the first month immediately after service is started)
After working on the price of $29.99/mo they ended up giving me 10/2 for the first year and 5/1 for 2nd year.

All together I'm getting:
10M/2M for 12 months and then 5M/1M for the next 12 months for a total bill of $29.99/mo with no additional taxes/fees.
Installation is free.
I'm supplying the modem.
Cancellation fee applies only if I cancel service and reside in a place that is serviceable by Charter.

exact same mess for me. The modem that I bought from craiglist suddenly "magically" appears in their records as though I am leasing them from charter! What the heck!?!?!

I called them a couple weeks ago after I saw the $5 charge on my January statement. I explained to them I bought my modem and they asked if I had a receipt for it. I said yes. The CSR went ahead and refunded the January lease fee and fixed their records. Why they couldn't do that the first time I called I have no idea. I hate to wonder what would have happened if I didn't have a receipt.

good word... it's a shame though... i lived in CA all my life and always paid about $30-45 a month for 10Mb down service. then i moved to the DC area and comcast offers 10Mb down for 20/month (6 months, then up to 30/month)

Pretty crazy the price differences in different states. Why won't these guys compete? Where's capitalism?
