Smoking hot deal on a dual core netbook! Don't know why this doesn't have more green.
Got one, looks like these sold out quick. But then, it was only a one-day sale.

I would love some Christmas help from FW on this one. I was given this computer for the holiday and I'm now comparing it to the 1410-8373, which appears to be a better computer. The main difference is a 250 GB HD and the processor. Can someone explain which processor is "better"? The 8373 has the Intel Core 2 Solo Processor ULV SU3500, 1.40 GHz with 3MB L2 Cache, 800MHz Front Bus Speed. I can't wrap my mind around which one is better. If someone can explain, I would appreciate it greatly!
Maybe because it's not available online or for instore pickup. Green anyway for OP!

It was until about 3 hrs ago.
I have been looking to buy this for almost a week. I went to place the order this evening and saw the price had dropped to 349. I was thrilled. During checkout it changed to no stock...

Other than the larger hard drive on the 1410-8373, why would you consider it to be better than the one you own? Your 1410-2285 has a dual core CPU, which is significantly more powerful than the single core processor in the 8373. Even if you need a big hard drive, you're better off keeping your computer, buying a 500gb drive and installing that to replace the 160gb drive in your Acer.
OP, please change your product description to indicate that this netbook comes with Win 7 Home Premium, [edited and corrected].
lousygolfer said: OP, please change your product description to indicate that this netbook comes with Win 7 Premium, not Home. There is no Win7 home, there is no win7 premium, there is only one single win7 home premium.

There is no Win7 home, there is no win7 premium, there is only one single win7 home premium. Sort of. They still have both Home Basic and Home Premium. Home Basic is not available in the US though. But yeah, what lousygolfer wrote is very confused too.
By the way, I just wanted to say that it's a huge pet peeve of mine when OP adds "HOT" in the title. I think that's something that the community decides, not the poster. Just saying...

FWIW: Passmark has CPU benchmarks (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/) and the SU2300 Celeron has a score of 927, and the SU3500 is 488, higher is better, so your Celeron benchmarks significantly higher, but that is a benchmark.
As for Win7, I find it interesting Microsoft says there are three editions: Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate, but yet I've seen ads for netbooks with Win 7 starter edition.

Unless software is written to take advantage of 2 processors, it will only use a fraction of the second processor. The most intensive processing for many people is graphics. If the video software is processing a HD movie and not written to take advantage of two processors, given the same cache, the processor with faster clock rate may be better if it is pushing the limits. ( and with a processor some processors can handle multiple threads with are kind of like processors, things that can be done in parallel if the software is written to take advantage of them. However, that does not seem to be the case here - the 3500 doesn't and the 2300 did not indicate that on the following web page. )
Here is a site that can help get ballpark comparisons. The speeds of the two processors, dividing the dual processor numbers in half are pretty comparable, with the single process having a slight edge. However the 3500 has 3MB of cache verses 1MB of cache for 2 processors so some processes will be much faster than this benchmark indicates. (and a few might be slower - cache is a funny thing - the time taken to load up the cache does not always result in enough savings.)
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
The single processor will probably will run loner on battery and run cooler and for some things faster unless a process uses two processors and doesn't have a big cache hit only having 1 MB of cache. (su2300-10w max, su3500-5.5watt max) Or the best thing might be to wait and see how the reviews come in to get a feel for how fast this dual processor 2300 is. Or maybe there is a good review already out there. I would not worry at all about either being fast enough for word processing or browsing and opening web pages.
I use linux but there is a way to check to see if what you are doing is using both processors in windows. I believe if you just do a ctrl-alt-del and select something like performance and then select something that shows the percent of utilization of each processor. Try that while viewing video. (Like Hulu HD-high definition if you have a fast internet connection or you pause and let the buffer fill up.)

Thank you LousyGolfer, jb2fw and ob. To summarize what I think you have all said, dual core should be better, but it doesn't really matter if software doesn't write for it. The solo will run longer and cooler, but maybe not handle HD or graphics as well. They both seem to be nearly identical for the basics, email/web/word processing. My remaining "problem" is that I can get the 8373 for $20 cheaper than the 2285 and I like the idea of the Solo running longer. An extra 90GB is not a big deal, but it's worth something. Ob, you mentioned dividing the benchmark by 2, is that what you are supposed to do with a dual core processor benchmark?
Maybe, I could ask my question this way too...
Would you buy a dual SU2300, 1.2 GHz for $399? or Would you buy a solo SU3500, 1.4 GHz for $379?
@Kirku - It's pretty safe to assume that all software is written for multiple cores. I have had both laptops and I'd pay at least $100 more for the SU2300. It's so much faster when running multiple apps. If I'm scanning my PC for viruses, the SU3500 machine was near unusable yet the SU2300 was usable. The SU2300 has virtualization too. The SU2300 could have easily been called a Core 2 Duo SU2300. BTW, I no longer have my SU3500 machine.
I have this thing, consider it near perfect super-netbook/mini-laptop at its $400 retail price. The keyboard is full-size, the HDMI works a treat on x264. Uses Intel's new laminar flow cooling technology and exhausts from the side, so your palms/legs don't sweat and the laptop stays cool however you hold it or whatever its setting on.;

Is this some sort of clearance item? Amazon doesn't have any in stock and hasn't for a while. Good price and no stock tends to indicate a clearance item. Wondering what new stuff might be coming out to replace it.

Thank you quickfingerz, exactly the type of response I was looking for.

I'd be surprised if they were this cheap though--it seems like Acer underestimated the popularity of these machines at this price point, as evidenced by the MSRP of the Vista single core being higher than the model in this thread.

Acer for sure underestimated the popularity of 1410/1810 series with 11.6" screen. For example, higher end model with SU7300 ($599 MSRP) is almost impossible to find those days.
As for the price - this model is cheaper than Core Solo SU3500 just because of the price of the chip. As it was mentioned in this thread, SU3500 is about twice more expensive.
One other thing to keep in mind - SU3500 supports virtualization when SU2300 does not

I could have sworn i saw a chart that said su2300 support virtualization

Went to Fry's B & M. It's not there. The store computer showed that at one point, the store had one in stock. ONE, as in 1, uno. I was not thrilled.
I was told that Friday there will be an 8 page ad with multiple sale items, blah blah blah.
great deal on a great laptop. i've been wanting this netbook/notebook for the past month. but since i was in no dire need to have it immediately, i was waiting for a deal like this to show up.
apparently, it's only for sale now for store pick-up only. and there's no Fry's around my zip code (says their store locater)
But i would definitely recommend this to anyone who plans on using their netbook for more than just browsing/word processing.
Also, from my research of the two different models. the SU2300 model comes with two 1GB RAM sticks. which makes upgrading a hassle the SU3500 model comes with one 2GB RAM stick. which makes upgrading easier
just some things to consider besides the processor/hard drive difference.

I used storm player, it's a Chinese software, here is the link http://dl.baofeng.com/storm3/Storm2009-1225.exe If you don't know Chinese, you will have difficulty in using it, but you can try it. It can play any format.
BTW, I installed XP. If you used vista, you should change to xp or win7.
I tried a Toshiba 11.6 one in Office Depot, and it has win7 and Intel celeron 743 cpu, similar to su3500. I tried WMP of win7 on that laptop, it can play 1080p smoothly.

try KMplayer. Best player I tried for Windows so far.
By the way, where do you guys watch free online HD movie?
I watch HD MOVIE on some Chinese website, speed is fast, and quality is quite good (up to 1280x720). I am just curious what's the popular English website ?
