I'm afraid if I file an accurate return it will wreck my chances for getting a government job, say like running the Treasury.

If your AGI's under $57k you can file for free. Also, everyone can submit electronic versions of most of the forms at the IRS's website for free now. Good option if you don't need any handholding on your return. http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html

If you started a business in 09 and had no revenue, do you just do a schedule C? When would you need TT Home and Business?
Massachusetts has free web filing as long as you were a resident of Massachusetts only in 2009 and did not have any installment sales between 1996 & 2002.
DownloadH&R Block at Home 2009 Basic (formerly TaxCut) for $7.96 at transparent.com. Price $9.95. Use code "retailmenot" at checkout to get 20% discount. Remove the "backup disk" from your shopping cart (unless you really want it). It also provided a copy of Deduction Pro. (I haven't installed it.)
When downloading, be sure to click on both download buttons -- one is for the tax software, the other is for Deduction Pro. Your e-file code will be shown on the screen immediately after you pay (together with the download buttons), be sure to write it down.
The Basic version includes a code for 5 federal e-files. It can do UNLIMITED paper files. It does not include state software. If you need state software, you are better off looking for one of the deals on the Deluxe version with state.
The Basic version can do just about every federal form, including long Form 1040, itemized deductions, Schedules A/B/C/D/E, etc.
Hello, We had a free download of H&R premium 1040 (non-EZ) for 2008: here Does anyone know any freebie deals for 2009 non-EZ for non-business (personal) - Fed+State ideally? Else best deals? For business for 2009: here I found: TaxAct both State & Fed $12: here Some comparisons: Here and here Please respond. Thanks.
TaxCut is now belong to H&R Block. TaxAct is a different software, isn't it? I am a bit confused.

TaxAct has always been a completely unrelated company. It is unfortunate that the names were so similar.
for TurboTax or HRBlock TaxCut, what is the difference between basic and free federal version. Are they both just as accurate? Is the difference just the ability to keep the taxes there for 7 years so you can go back to it? If I do it under the basic version and do it under the free version and the same numbers come out shouldn't I just go with the free federal version?

Hello Guys, Because of some family emergency I was out of the country for 1 month. I made sure that my CPA files taxes for 2009 but stupid guy didn't file. I owe apprx. $9000.00 for both Federal and State Taxes (I have copies of what he done. He didn't submit the same to IRS). I would like to know about the penalities for filing late and are there any options for me? Please suggest.
Thanks, Jingi

Jingi -- If they are already prepared, get the taxes filed with your fed and state ASAP. These need to be done by paper and not electronically at this point. Here are a couple of articles that discuss what to do and what the penalties are for your federal tax. Each State has their own penalty structure:
Is it normal on TaxAct to not print after the decimal point? Such as if your income on your 1040 was 75567.88, it only prints "75567." when I print my return?

Yea it's no big deal. I did an internship/part-time job at a small local firm during tax season this semester and the software I used rounded to the dollar instead of using decimal amounts.

Good. I emailed TaxAct but am waiting on a response.
TaxAct got me a return of $745, TurboTax got me nothing.
