I fish for Bass, a lot. I've found that the best way to successfully get The Big One is to avoid all the gimmick hooks (eg, Banjo kit) or cheap hooks and to be sure to use Owner brand chrome hooks. They cost several dollars more for a pack, but have a razor sharp point that holds up and is able to slide into an 8lb Bass's lower jawbone with a reasonable yank. Any other brand I've used (eg, Gamakatsu) requires constant sharpening, and even then, simply bounces off the jawbone or finds another reason to lose the fish.
Now, if all you're trying to get is the little 2-3lb bass, well, then never-mind - any hook will pierce skin.
