I think there is some bad information going out here.
If you return an item that earned Kohl's cash, you will either lose the Cash or if you spent it, the amount of your return will be deducted. There is no merchandise credit option. They used to give you the option of merchanise credit to keep the full refund amount if the Cash had been spent but this is no longer the case.
If you return something purchased with Kohl's Cash, you basically won't get a refund. This is why I was once told by my Kohl's that I could exchange it for any item in the store as long as it was the exact same amount. I ended up finding the size I needed so I didn't get a chance to see if they could really do that.
My information is from my own experience and is what is posted on the Kohl's website that I am pasting below:
Are you returning merchandise from a purchase that earned Kohl's Cash? When you return merchandise from a purchase that earned Kohl’s Cash, you will get a refund in the form of your original payment, and it will decrease the value of your Kohl's Cash.
Did you already spend your Kohl’s Cash? If you have already used your Kohl’s Cash, you will get a refund in the form of your original payment, and the amount of the Kohl’s Cash will be deducted from your return amount.
Are you returning merchandise that was purchased with Kohl's Cash? Return value of merchandise purchased with Kohl’s Cash may also be subject to adjustment.

Its not completely true. Ive returned many items that I used my KS on and they issued me store credits for that amount multiple times.... The stuff you lose the credits on is when its like $10 off coupons. You definitely do not get those back. What may be happening is, some stuff I return like maybe a year later, and perhaps after a certain amount of time, they give you the KS back as store credit for some reason. But I have definitely received many credits for item returns that had KS on them.

I have seen people post otherwise in the 'Kohls return policy thread' but I just can't help but think there were dollar-off coupons involved or they were confused about how they actually paid for it? I can't imagine that different stores have different policies. I literally just got back from Kohls, returned stuff I bought with KC and came home with MC.
If you bought something that EARNED Kohls cash and need to EXCHANGE it, they do tend to let you find something else in the store that costs the same. EDIT you may need to ask for this option

As discussed HERE, it looks like some stores (or cashiers) are indeed rolling out a new policy. I had returned items bought with KC numerous times before and got MC. But about a week ago the same store told me KC is no longer refundable . No special tricks here. Just the regular 30% coupon (with Kohl's charge).

ok, bummer - that's the thread I was referring to. Other question I guess would be, was the return made within the same redemption period. My store receipts with earnings still say: For returns of merchandise purchased with Kohls cash coupons, the value of the Kohls cash coupon will be returned as a Kohls merchandise credit. See details printed on Kohls cash.

If the $10/30 from the newspaper is not department specific, it should stack with the department specific coupons. It might depend on your local Kohl's - couldn't hurt to try

It was returned about 2 weeks after the purchase, so not within the same redemption period. It was an online purchase too and doesn't have the same wording as a store receipt.
Is this the first time that KC has overlapped? Any watchouts for using KC to earn KC? Say an item is $120, you use $20 of KC (from previous deal) = $100. Then you use the 30% off code, you're paying $70+tax and you'd get $10 in "future KC?" Is this how it's going to work? Thanks.

The $10 Kohls Cash and 30% off Kohls card are stackable, so you would be looking at $120 - 10 and then subtract 30% of 110. I'm not sure if you can use two $10 Kohls Cash, though.
Then here it is, although everyone probably got one anyway At least this one doesn't say "dressy apparel" like the wifi coupon

This coupon has a different barcode than the wifi coupon. Both say they can be combined with other offers. Anybody going to Kohl's to buy kids "dressy apparel" should see if they will stack. It won't hurt to try.
