Costco.com had this as a Deal of the Day last week, then it was completely gone from their website. Just noticed today that it's back! Mine is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow...great deal on a nice lappy with up to 12 hour battery life.

Gateway laptop deal from BB seems better. That said, I would pay more for Costco over Amazon because if something goes wrong in the first 90-days, Costco has a no questions asked return policy.
I'm assuming this deal doesn't compare much against the frontpage deal of the Gateware i3 (said to be i5) laptop for $500 @ BB? The benefit to this deal is a decent chip for people who want ultra-portable/light/longer battery life, right?

Spec wise it doesnt have as much as the Gateway, but sometimes quality is better than quantity! Asus is solid. Gateway's reliability is not. I am looking for a new laptop and was very tempted by the BB deal, but thought about how much I hate my current HP laptop because it was made cheap. Im out for a Asus or Sony Vaio... or at minimum a decent Toshiba. If anyone catches a good deal on one of these brands, pass it my way!

Gateway deal is better if you are looking for newer and faster processor. If you are looking for a laptop with a great battery life of up to 12 hours, this Asus deal is 100X better. At least you will be able to finish watching a 2 hour dvd movie with this one, but not the Gateway one.
I think this one might fit the bill of Notebook for portability and reliability (with 3 year warranty)...
Just make sure buy something that fits the needs of the user, not just the lower cost with newer processor.
taustinson said: The mail-in rebate is also valid if purchased from Amazon, so unless your state sales tax is less than 5%, the Amazon deal is still cheaper. I think Costco gives you 1 add'l year of warranty.
this is a good deal, but personally i am still holding out for the ul80vt to drop in price or have another rebate. you get a discrete nvidia video card there instead of the craptacular intel gma.
I just had to go for this. I had just bought the HP DM3 14" laptop from the Microsoft store deal of a week ago. But I loved my Eee 1000HE so much, it was just perfect, but underpowered. The HP only gets around 5 hours battery life. If this ASUS is as good as the specs, I might have an HP for sale on eBay soon.
yes costco add one more year of warranty but you can get that with many credit cards too

Just my 2 cents. Damn, I didn't notice the 12 hour battery life... that's insane/amazing! And, a 3-yr warranty is pretty sick too. Most laptops are a crappy 1-yr warranty. I'll never forget the potential hassle I went through when my Dell laptop was crapping out at 11.5 months... luckily I was able to convince them to swap out my logic board before the warranty was up in 2-3 weeks!!
Gateway what?! Applea and oranges. how in the heck one can compare a big core I5 meatbook to a slip energy optimized Asus I don't get. It's like saying, hey that Ford F150 is a better deal than that Toyota Prius becuase it has better tow capacity. What?!
I've been watching these Asus. They compare nicely to the Acer Timeline 1410s, but the original price on these are inflated IMHO. 1410s have comparable parts, although scale lower with the su2700 single core, but start at less months ago. I picked up a 4810 for $530, and it wasn't even on sale. Radio Shack has had 'em for sub $450.

What's wrong w/ this 4500mhd? It is very power efficient and decodes h.264; works w/ new flash v10.1b2 to boot. 720p on youtube is around 30% cpu on my culv; 10%-20 less when playing back 1080p locally. it's not good for gaming but who buys one of these for gaming?

The only thing a discrete GPU will do is burn power and generate heat. BTW, the mpeg accelerator in the GPU is a very small block (5% of the chip area). Someone please point me to an app that uses a gpu other than HD video playback or 3D gaming!
I also recently bought a (refurbed) Acer TImeline AS4810 (SU3500 and 4G DDR3) for $362 (after 15% BCB, free ship, no tax from CC).
This Costco deal would be good if not for the CA tax that basically wipes out the rebate.
I bought another Asus last month from Staples for myself and am thinking of getting this model for my brother, the only difference I can tell is the processor. Can anyone tell me if this processor is better or worse than mine? Is this like the Acer Timeline's processor where it's underpowered? Thanks

Is there a way to sign up for Deal of the Day notification on the Costco website; I get emails from Costco but not Deal of the Day.
Not that I know of. I just happened to go to Costco.com, and there it was. The rebate is good "channel wide," so if you find it from another online retailer, you can get very close to the same deal. You just won't get the extra Costco goodies (like extra year of warranty, 90 day return, etc.)
Good luck.

does the battery really last for 12 hours? and does performance deteriorate over time? anyone had any experience with Asus batteries?

I agree. I am not sure about the need for wireless either, all it does is draw power and interfere with my microwave. Someone show me an app that uses networking besides Netscape!
if you are still looking for similar deal, WalMart is selling it too. add on bcb at 20% and youll get a better price too http://www.WalMart.com/ip/Asus-14-320-GB-UL80AG-A1/13031295

I think it's still there with rebate form listed...

The UL30Vt is almost the perfect laptop for me. I just wish they used a better LCD, as even the EEE's have better contrast than most sub $1k laptops.

If taxes are included and prices are comparable with Amazon then the Costco deal is pretty good. As someone mentioned. The 90 day return is a good feature. But, IMHO a two year warranty compounded with an additional warranty, total 3 years, if you use AMEX is fantastic!

I just recieved both the Asus UL80AG-A1 laptop and the Lenovo U450P (same specs as Asus but with DDR3 ram and lesser battery life span of 6hrs). Trying to decide which one to keep and which one to return...any suggestions?

Is it always better to have a higher GHZ processor or are their other differences in performance (the ASUS has a 1.3ghz whereas the HP has a 2.3ghz)? I once heard AMD run hot compared to Intel?
Which laptop is better? This Asus
OR
HP Pavilion dv6-2157us Entertainment Laptop - $449.99 (Staples) Processor AMD Turion II Dual-Core Mobile M520 Processor Memory (RAM) 4GB Memory Type DDR2 Hard Drive Size 320GB Hard Drive Type SATA Optical Drive SuperMulti 8X DVDñR/RW with Double Layer Support Display Size 15.6" Display Type High-Definition LED HP BrightView Widescreen Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Battery Type 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Network Card Wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n WLAN Video Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Graphics with 128MB Display Cache Other ports 5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader # of USB slots 4 Bluetooth Enabled No Dimensions 14.9" (L) x 10.15" (D) x 1.33" (min H)/1.61" (max H) Weight 6.47lbs Warranty 1 year Extra Features HP Imprint with the espresso design in high-gloss black & HP Webcam with integrated digital microphone
I am tempted by the not-too-big-screen, long battery life, tons of memory, faster chip and lightweight. If it didn't have the optical drive and was a little cheaper, I would have bought already. But if anyone can tell me if this would work as good mobile computer, that's what I'm after. Thanks.
