At least here in SoCal Costco reduced the CodeKey OBD II code reader to $29.97. (I think it was 36.99 before, not sure though).
It's $39.98 on Amazon.

It's a pretty simple one, but does the job. (At least on my 96 Vdub)
Doesn't read any of the other stuff that the fancy ones or the PC based ones or the ScanGauge can show like operating parameters.

Picture of it and text from the box.

I bought this in a past deal. Definitely worth having. Even if you don't do the work yourself, you can at least read the code and know what's wrong before you take it to a mechanic so you'll know if you're getting taken for a ride. You can also use it to clear the code and see if it comes back (if it doesn't come back, it may be just an intermittent fault and not require a repair. Don't do this for a flashing check engine light).

Note that this device may only show you the code (e.g. "P1712"), so you'll need to look the code up on the internet. Use http://www.codekeyunlock.com/default.asp or Google it. I keep a printed list of the codes for my car in the glove box.

isn't this hotter? Easier to plug in; looks better; cheaper; supports OBD II & CAN. Comes with diag code cd

Thanks. Got one. Save a trip to Costco and some extra tax.

Agreed.

at least this deal serves some purpose... it reminded me to go close my costco account and get my $50 back.... just not feeling it. Almost every time I compare a deal there, whether it's 28 chix thights for $10; detergent; soap; this OBD; snacks; canned goods; tp/pt, etc., I can find the same or better deal (after tax), and not even buying in bulk. Just go to a regular B&M Grocery, WalMart, or online - WITH exception to three things: Seattle Mountain Coffee, Drinking Water, and Air Duster Cleaner. I used to really like CostCo for their exceptional return policy on TVs... and may buy a tv from them again, but definitely won't lament the membership's absence, and I reckon if I want a really good deal down the road, I'll have another coupon book of free stuff and another cancelled membership shortly thereafter

Maybe it'd be different if bulk were actually an advantage to me such as if I had a large family...

Actually it looks like the Scan Tool that hakujin pointed out can also check the status of the Readiness Monitors, which the CodeKey can't.

ididit can you confirm that it shows the readiness once you got yours?

Yes, the Scan Tool hakujin pointed out is able to check status of Readiness Monitor

By now they hiked the price at Amazon to $39.39, but maybe it's coming back in Goldbox for $22 like there was a while back as mentioned in http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/expired-deals/990077
