Starmicro.com has an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 OEM (no heatsink/fan) processor for $136
$140 - $4 automatic discount + $0 shipping = $136 shipped

http://www.starmicro.net/detail.aspx?ID=1163

Newegg (retail version with fan) = $168
Next lowest price on Google Shopping for the OEM version is $159 with free shipping on eBay.

I personally own this processor and absolutely love it. Runs everything I throw at it. Was thinking of buying a 2nd for a home server and found this deal. Won customer choice award on Newegg, and has a 5-star rating with over 2000 reivews. Read some reviews here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E168191...

for that kind of money, with no fan, you might as well be looking at an i5.

or the frys b&m deal that's listed in another thread out here:

INTEL PENTIUM DUAL CORE E6300 + ASUS P5QPL-AM 69.99 + TAX

however the i5 motherboards are far more expensive.....and you can't re-use DDR2 memory with the i5 which requires DDR3 memory.

And many of us don't live near a Fry's...

So this is a good deal for many.....

Still not really, maybe 6 month or a year ago. IMO you'd be better of buying a Phenom II 555 BE (or even the 550) and new MB for the same price as the e8400, even on sale. (PS. Yes, I have an e8400). e8400 may be a little better, but the Phenom still out does it in many tests, and for a good bit cheaper.
