I would not buy a hard drive from a chinese web site.

But you'd buy, of course, 99% of everything else that's made there: Nike's, Macs, et al.

Thanks got one. Ships from U.S warehouse (California). Confirmation says it takes 1 week to get it. Same drive is 79.99 on Amazon.

Target has it in store for $59.xx

Target one is 3.5" requiring power. This is 2.5", no extra power necessary.

I think he is talking about buying from a chinese website -- which is not the same as buying chinese products from a US website.

I don't mind buying Chinese made products that are built for U.S. Companies. I never buy Chinese crap made by a Chinese company (i.e. Fake Gucci and Nike's)...

Re-certified versions currently at WDStore at $49.99 (320GB) and $45.99 (250GB), free shipping with promo code "WDFREE". I personally don't place a lot more faith in a new hard drive over a refurbished one, not mechanical ones anyway!

Edit: Double post due to first registration. Sorry.

I looked and it appears these recertified drives (at least the WDME models) come with a 3-year warranty which bodes well for them.

A few weeks back, I purchased the brand new (non re-certified) from WD Outlet Store; Model WDMER3200TN, 320GB, for $59.99 plus shipping. Just checked and its still available.

can the HD be removed and inserted into a laptop? My laptop HD is almost full, thinking of swap the drives.

yes, passports are 2.5" hard drives. Make sure your laptop supports 2.5" SATA and its not IDE

??????????
I might use a refurb drive for transferring data, but I wouldn't want to use it for important backups or an operating system.

You can get a 640GB WD Mybook for $50 after $25/$75 coupon at Staples

I found it here:
http://support.wdc.com/warranty/policy.asp#recertified
The table right under "Recertified Products (USA and Canada)" shows 3 years for the WDME models as long as it's a retail kit (and not OEM).

I found another heading of "Recertified Products (USA and Canada)" further down that same page that has the text you mentioned. It seems WD has a very misleading website because both cannot be true.

That's not a 2.5" drive and it must be powered by an external power supply -- so you're comparing apples to oranges.
