With advent of optical mice, mouse pads are for the most part a thing of the past. At work the only places we use mouse pads are on flat black desktops and other surfaces that don't seem to reflect properly.
It is my opinion that if you have an optical mouse, a mouse pad actually gets in the way, limits your movement, maybe this is why they are on sale?
I tend to use mouse pads even though I have optical mice. I've noticed that the surface of my desk at home is showing signs of wear due to "mousing." And this is with non-gaming usage. Also, I feel that the cushioning of the pad aids in comfort versus the hard surface of the desk.

I have to agree. Tried the desk only method and didn't find it as comfortable, much rougher on your skin too. as for mouse control, (yes mine is an optical wireless), I don't notice a difference. So for the $1.49 it's worth the comfort.
For this reason, I ended up going to my Big Lots yesterday and purchased two for $0.80 / each.
