That's right, the new TiVo Premiere with a lifetime subscription for LESS THAN $500!!!!!!

Title/pictures says it all!!!

You can pre-order and they will ship the beginning of next month.

Definitely going to try to sell my 3 series now

http://www.tivo.com/products/home/index.html

:edit:

to clarify a lifetime subscription is $199 for current customer of the lifetime subscription. Other month to month/year to year subscribers will recieve a discount on the box itself, from what members have posted its 20% off! And also you should receive $100 off the lifetime subscription in addition to the 20% off.

this is not that great of a deal. I have 3 series 3's all with lifetimes. All with 1.3TB drives. They work flawlessly. Why should I spend 200+ for the box AND another 199 for lifetime on a new device.

Doesnt make sense.

damn, if only it played movies from my PC directly on my TV.. I still might consider this

<sarcasm>because you get a new UI that in reality can simply be downloaded to your Series 3 if TiVo allowed! </sarcasm>

what the difference between the 2 units?

for an extra $200, you get a $75 1TB drive that should be included in every TiVo anyway! </sarcasm>

In all seriousness, as someone who owns 2 Tivos and was looking for a third, this is a pretty big slap in the face.

does this mean that they will de-activate my current lifetime sub on my s3 though??

just activated a Series 3 HD XL last month w/ lifetime, and have another Series 3 HD (Not XL) on lifetime... trying to justify the added expense of selling them and replacing with Premiere, but having a hard time doing so...

I guess I haven't been paying enough attention...what is the difference between this and my TivoHD? Just a new interface?

Edit: And I guess the ability to add lifetime service for $199?

I LOVE TiVo and had one of the original units.....

I cannot see anything better with this unit than my series 3. At least nothing that I would use.

Anyone care to point out what is so great about it over a true series 3?

can all these box connect external drive for additional storage?

I agree with the others. I've reviewed the specs and it's nothing to write home about. Sales are waning and they need to bring the spotlight on themselves again. All companies do it to remain profitable. The last groundbreaking improvement to the TiVo IMHO was the ability to record in high def. I'll pass on this one. For those who've wanted a TiVo and couldn't afford it, this is a fantastic time to buy one since there will be a flood of TiVo HD and TiVo S3s on the market.

JoeyTribiani said: does this mean that they will de-activate my current lifetime sub on my s3 though??

doesnt seem that way if i read the link correctly.

Yeah, that would be a nice feature. I keep thinking about a Moxi for that reason, but there's still a couple hiccups in that product that keep me away from it. Great value there though since the subscription is included in the price.

My mom has two series 2 TiVos. Would this be a good opportunity for her to upgrade?

It is sad that ReplayTV is no longer in this market. The third-party software called DVArchive worked flawlessly mimicking a second ReplayTV unit, allowing you to transfer movies to the PC and stream them back from the PC.

wait if i upgrade, will my existing series 3 still keep the lifetime on it?

i can't believe i paid over 1000 for my series 3. hahahah oh well i use it every day.

Totally agree about RTV. I have 2 sitting in my basement and I wish they were still a viable option. I used DVArchive as well, and the streaming was amazing as well as the scripts to cut commercials and rebuilt the file for storage.

Google "Streambaby" -- Easy to setup and use. Works great on my TivoHD!

TiVo keeps disappointing its fans. They have been around a long time, but what has really improved? Bigger hard drives? Series 3 brought HD and HDMI, but that was obvious necessity. People have pages and pages of features (easy ones, too) they wish TiVo would implement, but TiVo won't listen. I wonder what happens to a tech company in the 21st century that doesn't improve its product.

I keep waiting for Hulu support on TiVo. Pretty soon broadcast television will be a thing of the past and it will all be download. For now I am stuck with my PS3 and PlayOn. But I get shows that are on cable that I can't watch live because I won't $100 a month for TV. I will stick with my Series 3 and probably move more and more to Hulu and Netflix.

k here is what TiVo says:

Amanda: The Lifetime Service will remain on the series3, but the new TiVo will need a new service plan.

so its still 499 + 200 = 699.

If you can get about 500 for series 3 TiVo on eBay, then it would be about a 200 upgrade.

Uh, Media Center comes for free with Windows 7. Anybody thought of just connecting your desktop to your TV? I do that now and I still use the desktop for a ton of other stuff. Works great and I can add disc space any time I want. I just don't get TiVo at all anymore.

Yes.

Upgrading FAQ

If I have Product Lifetime service on my original TiVo box can I participate in the TiVo Premiere Upgrade Program?

Yes, if you have Product Lifetime service (PLS) on your original TiVo box you are eligible for the TiVo Premiere Upgrade Program.

Since PLS is not being transferred from your original TiVo box it will remain active and you can continue to enjoy it on another TV. Plus if both boxes are connected to your home network you can enjoy Multi-Room Viewing.

Do I have to get rid of my original TiVo box when I upgrade?

No. You can keep your original TiVo box active and continue to enjoy it on another TV. Plus if both TiVos are connected to your home network you can enjoy Multi-Room Viewing.

My old 30 hr ReplayTV (Panasonic Showstopper) is still going strong with it's dialup schedule update. I've upgraded and replaced the hard drives twice.

Anyone figure out what the new Tivos do that the old TivoHD could not do?

jesternl said: damn, if only it played movies from my PC directly on my TV.. I still might consider this

I do this all the time. I "archive" the movies to my PC with TivoWeb in wmv format and then pull them back with TTCB (TivoToComeBack as opposed to TivoToGo). I think I used pyTivo for TTCB, but it's been so long since I set it up. It just works now.

It only works with clearQAM. In my area (boston) expanded basic is encrypted.

Will look into it, thanks!

thanks anyway tho, hope it helps someone else

I took a quick look at the specs. The big thing I see there is the addition of 1080p output. The older models could only do 720p or 1080i.

Still no 4 show recording? Lameness. Nice that it has 1080p... but when are we going to see 1080p movie downloads?

It's not a bad deal if you're looking to add another TiVo to your system. But for a minimum $500 investment, I'll stick with what I have, thanks...

Source
How is TiVo Premiere different than TiVo HD (Hardware)

  • Premiere has twice as much storage as TiVo HD
  • The Premiere processor runs 30% faster (400 MHz vs. 300 MHz) and has a dual core
  • It will have a redesigned HD user interface, which will provide users with a much richer, more customizable experience
  • Full HD support, including 1080p and 1080i formats
  • Because of its different capabilities, including the support of Adobe Flash, it will provide TiVo a great platform for future innovation.
  • It is slimmer
  • Premiere is ENERGY STAR compliant

Do current cable or OTA broadcasts have enough signal quality to make 1080p vs. 1080i noticeable?

BTW, IIRC, existing lifetime service customers already get $100 off lifetime service on additional units, so this is really only a $100 discount...

johnny98 said: Do current cable or OTA broadcasts have enough signal quality to make 1080p vs. 1080i noticeable?
Nobody is currently broadcasting in 1080p (there is not even a broadcast standard for 1080p). You will probably not notice a difference, since if you have a 1080p display, it's already upscaling to 1080p. The only difference for broadcasts would be that the TiVo handles the upscaling instead of the TV.

However, it could conceivably provide higher quality for non-broadcast content (such as Netflix).

Been wanting a second receiver. Considering I paid $200 a couple yrs ago for my TiVo HD, $240 for the Premiere isn't so bad.

Can't bring myself to buy the lifetime subscription though. I'd be more comfortable if it was tied to account, not physical box.

The $499 price is if you want the THX version, which has a larger hard drive and is THX certified.

The 20% off for the box itself did not work when I logged in... (I am a current lifetime subscriber)

So exactly what new over the TiVo HD with this Premier series?

The 20% off is only for month-to-month and yearly subscribers. Lifetime subscribers get the $200 off the subscription.

Skipping 131 Messages...

cox has a press release out that they will do TiVo rollouts/installs for free. I think I'm going to bite the bullet on this one, $500 for premiere and a lifetime isn't fatwallet great, but I want multi-room viewing with my existing HD.

afaik, the free/cheap premiers are tied to the $20/month for three years... I saw a bunch of premiers on eBay, scammers trying to pawn off free tivos for $100-$200..
