PETsMART - $1 Fish - Tetras & Silver Dollars
PETsMART has Neon Jumbo, Black Skirt, Red Minor, Long Fin Red Minor, and Silver Dollars on sale for $1 each. All you have to do is sign up for their Savings Card (if you don't already have it) and your good to go. The Silver Dollars were all out in my area....usually $5.29 each and most of the Tetras run $2 - $4 each.

I think this is a pretty good deal because you usually purchase about 5 Tetras or more and the savings become more substantial then.

Hope this helps some aquarium enthusiast out!

PETsMART fish are very risky. They have contaminated my tank and a friends here in Marin county. Not worth the risk!

Funny you say that. I've had the opposite problem here in Philly, PA. PETsMART's fishes have been good for me, but it's the Petco fishes that contaminate my tank. So fish quality is YMMV, but this is a great deal.

fish from any environment or seller are "contaminated" This is why all new fish should be quarentined for atleast 60 days and treated with proper medications if needed. For cheap fish risky soaks and baths help considerably reduce the possibility of these fish bringing anything in.

Not worth the risk!I think this is one of those situations where YMMV in terms of the quality of the store. I have been to one big box pet store nearby which has the most unkempt aquariums: algae all over, dead fish, etc. But I've also been to other locations of another big box pet store, and the tanks looked immaculate and the fish looked healthy.

Anecdote: I had (until this past weekend) some white cloud minnows that I had picked up for $1/each from Petco/PETsMART (can't recall exactly which) to cycle my fish tank -- way back in Sept 2005. Unfortunately, I had an incident this past weekend with a CO2 system which caused a wipe the one night that I have been away in over a year. edit: it was actually a solenoid valve that failed in the open position and not the pH controller

Definitely agree with this. I have two PestMarts within maybe 15 mins of each other - one is always nasty like you describe, and one is great. I obviously go to the better one. There's a Petco as well, and while the rest of the store doesn't seem as nice, the fish section is always well kept!

Don't get any silver dollars if you want to keep your live plants! They will eat them all...just in case anyone didn't know.

The silver dollars area schooling fish too, meaning you should buy four or more of them. They get rather large too, so a large tank is needed for them to thrive.

Both stores are OK for me. I also bought rare fish from non-chain stores (cannot find them at PETsMART or Petco).

Both Petco and PETsMART have fish sale recently. Petco has more regular fish sale than PETsMART. I bought Neon Tetra last wk and Platy/snail 3 wk.s ago from PETsMART.

Petco's web site has its store circular (our local Petco has $1 fish, or $5 for 5 fish, till 03/20 for Male and Female Guppies, small Regular Tiger Barbs, Gold Barbs, small Albino Tiger Barbs, Cherry Barbs, Gold Twinbar Platys and Mickey Mouse Platys).

Do not over stock & do not over feed the fish in your tank. Keep changing part of the water frequently.

.

I've had aquariums since I was 5. I can tell you that not all pet stores are created equal when it comes to buying fish. Some Petcos are really clean, some are horrible, and you will have fish die on you and/or spread diseases to the rest of your tank. It depends 100% on the employees and how they maintain the tanks. If you see blue green slime on any surface of the aquarium, that's a sure sign they have employees that don't care. If you see any sick or unusually slow moving fish, and the water is clean, it probably means they just wiped off the tank but the water quality is still bad. Either case, look for unusual acting fish.

"we're sorry but the page does not exist"

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, sushi.

I bought 3 fishes from PETsMART, first one died within 2 week, second one died within 1 month. The third one is not eating, I think it's going to die soon.

As people have said before, It is always a good idea to quarantine new fish before adding them to an established aquarium. especially true if you have fish that eat other live fish, set up a feeder tank, don't just dump a bag of feeder goldfish into your tank, set up a tank and keep a few dozen 'food' fish. it is especially important if you have expensive or delicate fish.

How long was this deal good? Is it still available?

hehehe silver dollars for $1. That's funny.

I bought 8 fishes from PETsMART last week, and only 2 silver dollars fishes left.

Acording to SD, the sale goes till 3/21.

phdo > any idea why the 6 died? If it was disease, it should have also affected your other fish.

Did you get the fish replaced under their 14 day guarantee?

It appears that many of the fish obtained during this sale are of inferior quality (same batches on Tuesday and Friday). Bought 9 cardinals at various stores throughout S Cal (I'm picky). Quarantined them for about 3 days. Normally, this is a safe period if the fish are not harboring parasites (1 month for 100% confidence level). Two days after introduction into my new tank, one of the new cardinal had white blotches at the dorsal fin. I immediately quarantined the fish but it was too late. Lost all 25 adult cards (1.3-1.5") and a pair of breeding bettas in the main 55 gal tank. The only survival was an otocynclus.

Oh yeah...all the PETsMART stores were clean. Have bought cardinals from these stores over the years without any problem. The tanks in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach are full of infected cardinals.
