I just noticed pdanet is now $23.95 for android (was $29.95). Seems like a good deal for tethering on the DROID. I've used the trial and it does a great job.
*edit: - There are alternatives that allow you to tether for free but you need to root your phone (not for everyone) - PdaNet trial is free for 30 days, then after that you can still continue to use it for free but w/o HTTPS
I tether for free on a rooted G1. And that includes wi-fi tethering, not just USB/BT as this $24 software. Not sure if this is really a deal except for 'PdaNet does NOT require root access or hacking your phone's firmware in order to work. It is just a regular Android application that works on all Android phones as-is.'
Ya know - I use this on my Omnia, Omnia II and my Treo 650Wx and can say that it is so simple I was willing to pay the $$ for it rather than hack my phones for "free". With the $15 a month i am saving NOT paying Verizon for "tethering" I simply say that it has paid for itself AND I am saving $$ every month while keeping my warranty on the phone intact. Some may argue that hacking my phones doesn't void the warranty Verizon's CLUELESS techs may say otherwise leaving you wondering what to do next.
Bravo for the deal ---- Full price is worth every penny and any sale is worth its weight in surfing!
Anybody have any recent experience with getting in trouble with Verizon for using this? I'm not sure what the rules are, but I've read that you're not supposed to tether with the Droid on Verizon, even though this is in the Marketplace as an app. I would hate to get hit with crazy bills or have to pay an ETF for violating the T&C made by the ***** (censored) at Verizon

If they are really looking, they could find but usually don't unless you run torrent. This software creates a tunnel between the phone and your PC and the client piece running on the phone "repackage" the tcp packets to look like the transmission originated from the phone. So unless you run this in outrageous amount of data, carrier would not spend time to investigate your data stream.

5 gigs/ month is the magic number where your account gets flagged. Doesn't mean termination necessarily, just that you will get scrutinized for usage. Stay below 5 gigs and you don't have to worry, at all.

I have the LG ENV Touch through Verizon. I found out how to set it up to tether on the internet and it works great. What's interesting is that Verizon does not even register my usage. When I log in to Verizon's web page and look at the current usage, it shows as 0kb. So perhaps the tethering scheme I am using masquerades as a phone call. I'm not sure how it works exactly but I do know that, for two months now, it has always shown 0kb data usage.

Can you please point me to the right resources. I must confess for being dumb here, but I had tried google search before to tether my phone but I don't see any "quick and reliable" alternative over pdanet.
DroidMod.org. grab dm updater in the market. Never imagined I would root my droid, but droidmod and dm updater made it as simple as installing an app. Overclocking(perfectly safe) & wifi teather sealed the deal.
That all being said...I have previously used pdanet for years and its worth every last penny if you choose not to root.
So I am a complete noob. Don't you have to already pay for a data plan with your Verizon phone? Is the only advantage with this product, seeing things larger on your laptop?

It's not just seeing things larger. There are lots of things that you can do on a laptop that you can't on a phone. For example, I tether my laptop so that I can VPN into my corporate network.

You can also use flash on your browser if you are on your laptop. I have read on the internet that Skyfire is looking at making an Android browser so be on the lookout. For those that don't know Skyfire is the only mobile browser out right now that can do flash.
He goes into every little detail. My reaction after doing it the first time was "why didn't I do that sooner?". The default configuration includes a "wifi teather" app that works just as well or better than pdanet.
Pdanet works great. The free version works over wired tether. Paid ver is only needed if you want to tether over BT. I like charging my phone while tethered so wired link is fine with me.

Your phone isn't the ideal internet connection for your other computers. I mean, you want to be able to take the phone with you and make calls, right? Torrenting means you'd have to leave the phone in the vicinity of a computer.

Wifi tethering would free up the physical location of the phone, albeit you would really want it plugged in for extended sessions as your phone's battery will drain down rapidly. Alternatively I find just using a long USB cable is better since it gets the power from the PC this way. For someone who lives alone and just needs internet access w/o need for torrenting or heavy downloading, tethering works well and is economical.
Keep in mind though that only AT&T allows for concurrent voice + 3G data, so you can have an active internet connection AND be talking to someone at the same time with the phone. This is as the other carriers have technical limitations that prohibit this.

Most of us use HTTPS: by necessity several times a day (and all the time for Gmail).

-going down the same path, I only use my laptop to hit up fatwallet and other sites. Im thinking of getting rid of comcast and going with 3g. only issue is how to make my dish box work, or hook it up so I don't have the recurring 5.00 fee. now its conneced thru my network, anyway to use 3g, and setup the once a week download?
Having come from a WinMo device with the HTC Wifi app I am waiting till I get 2.1 for my Hero to decide what I'm going to do.. Too many pro's to having wifi share your connection.. I've tested PdaNet and it works just fine.. But don't like not having Wifi as an option..

That is not true at all. I have T-Mo and do that all the time with high quality calls and 3G.

As of Feb. there's no longer a separate $5 fee on DISH for not having your dual output receivers hooked to either broadband or phone. The cost is already included in your extra receiver fee. You won't save any $$ by having them hooked up.

Should've said "viable carrier with 3G". Tmob's 3g coverage has many years to catch up to where at&t was even two years ago. Tons of issues with tmobile 3G users being reverted to EDGE due to notoriously spotty towers implemented, in which case you will not enjoy concurrent connections.
Guys, the benefit of rooting is not just that you can use tethering for free but you can also turn your phone into a WiFi access point and serve Internet to everyone around you. I rooted my Sprint HTC Hero in 30 seconds and installed the latest version of http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ - BAM, you have free unlimited WiFi tethering/AP.

that is incorrect! flash mobile has been out for IE mobile for a few months now, and it works just fine. also a stand alone flash player for WM6x has been out for awhile also. both the ie plugin and standalone player are 1st party from Adobe! WM owns you all! (also anything you can do on a laptop you can do WM device as well, for example VPN or VNC, which are also usually first party. )

Good company and just bought full version for the Hero.
Had it in the past for Centro, but had to buy again for new platform. Good news is once you pay for platform price I will be able to transfer lifetime on new phones with Android. I think Android will be around for a few years. Google is not going anywhere. Not sure about Palm. Somebody will buy them soon.
