On the gas gauge on your car's dash, there is a teeny tiny arrow telling you which side of the vehicle your gas tank is on. My niece showed me that yesterday on my rental car. I find this to be delightful.

Not every car has that, but it's pretty common on cars made within the last 15 years.

My car has the gas tank symbol but the gas tank is on the opposite side of what it shows. It is not always correct.

I just found out about it earlier this year Then I figured out why I didn't know about it before... my '86 Camaro and '02 Tahoe are too "old" to have this nice indicator, although DS17 '04 Saturn has it.

I've been told that some newer cars don't have the little arrow, but that they all have a little gas pump icon on the gas gauge and that the hose for the gas pump is on the same side as the hole for your gas tank. In my experience, that's always been true.

Did you know there are four points in the continental US that can only be accessed by land via Canada.
My car is less than 15 years old, it has no arrow, and the hose on the gas tank symbol is on the wrong side.

That's probably why I didn't know about this. My old car was an Accord - probably didn't have it either.

That article lists the northwest angle, Elm Point, Minnesota; Point Roberts, Washington; and the town of Alburgh, Vermont. Alburgh vermont is connected to the mainland via 3 bridges. But there is a lace NE of the town called province point. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=alburgh+vermont&ll=45.012086,-73.2...
I also question why the term "continental US" excludes alaska. Alaska is indeed part of the continent of north america.
I remember the good ol' days when you flipped down the license plate to fill up the car.

The correct term is contiguous US, for just that reason.

On the bright side, manhattan and long island aren't part of the continental US. I'm liking this term.

Sometimes it's an arrow. But if you don't see an arrow it's a tiny gas pump. The side with the gas pump handle/hose is the side. I've rented many cars, so I've learned.
