So most of you guys/gals are against in showing a receipt?
I just don't get it, maybe i am too nice.

i think most people are against but cave in because don't want to go through hell. if everyone did not show receipt and they could do nothing about it, those who agreed to show would probably walk away to. problem is cops and stores think they have all the power, so even when you're right they may find a way to still make you wrong. Its just in their mindset and they'll do that. Kind of like, I'm always right and i'll find a way to be right all the time, cannot be wrong

Interesting article showing that sometimes the criminals wear a badge. I served on a grand jury in Nassau County in 2/07 and the testimony police officers give to grand juries carry a lot of weight. Also, the cop is still employed.

The ACLU doesn't meet the same criteria as a cancer society, etc. Refund everyones $$$ not redirect it. I mean it's only been a month. Total BS!

His site stated from the beginning that any donations not used will be donated to the American Civil Liars Union, but for that fact I might have tossed a few bones his way.

agreed. He likely would have recieved much more $$$ had he not mentioned the ACLU

He could later just say that he's going to use the funds received from Paypal to foot the legal bills, and then donate that same amount to ACLU, out of his own pocket.

He KNEW exactly what was going on (and admits as such) but decided to "play dumb". I would hazard a guess that this whole scenario was a "set-up" situation. I think that it's JUST stupid to behave like this gentleman did. He's looking for an excuse to sue someone, anyone, and puts himself in the situations to do so.It doesn't matter. It's wrong to to have people arrested just because they're smart alecks. There has to be a suspicion of law breaking, and how does one break the law by paying for something with the nation's legal currency? OTOH the store would be justified in banning that person, but that too would be kind of stupid.

A long time ago, did turn people in to the authorities for not wearing their required yellow stars?

My response was directed at the gentleman for pursuing a civil lawsuit. Trust me, I know that being a jackass is not sufficient cause to arrest someone. I know that just because person is a complete and utter jerk doesn't mean that they should be arrested. If being a jackass were grounds for an arrest then I could have several people arrested in my lifetime (and on occasion probably had myself arrested). By the same token--when a person goes looking for trouble (like this man did), and finds it, you shouldn't whine and complain. Take the lumps like a man. I'm all for standing up for your rights, I'm all for standing up for the rights of others. But it should be done in an intelligent and respectful manner--this guy was neither.

Fry's (but not Fry's) pays their checkers $50 if they find an item not listed on the receipt, as I learned when a $10 item that I wanted on a separate receipt wasn't charged.

I don't think most people are against but cave in. Most of us don't want to give trouble to others, not just because of ourselves. The employees are doing the duty the company asked them to, why giving them trouble when it just costs you a few seconds.

I do believe if companies stop asking people for the receipt, it would encourage more shoplifting, it benefits neither you nor the company but the shoplifters. Or the companies need to install many cameras, which you don't like, and have people dedicated to watching them. Either way, the cost will be transferred to the customers.
