Prove to me that:
* Driving below 60 under NORMAL everyday conditions will increase my efficiency by 30%
* Prove to me that dropping the National Speed Limit to 60MPH or less will cause the price of a barrel to plummet down to more manageable levels
and I'll probably do it.
My furnace does zero MPH. Why am I paying $4.50 a gallon for that?

If I drive 65mph, I get 30mpg.
How about instead of dropping the speed limit, we impose heavy taxes on people who drive bigger vehicles or ones that get under 30mpg. Where I live, we don't have emissions testing, so I know some people are running without emissions devices or they are horribly out of tune.
Here's another option, start selling little tiny cars like they have over in Britian. You know, the little things that look like Mini Coopers and have like 1 liter engines. They get like 50mpg, and they aren't even hybrid or anything.

Actually, its not just Britain but the rest of the world that uses smaller cars.
I've started driving just 55 on the highway that i drive on that thats the speed limit and i'm getting considerably better gas mileage. Unfortunately my car is from 1997 and fairly big (Mercury Sable) so i still only get like 25 mpg, but with gas as high as it is its definitely worth it.
I never could understand speed limits. I have long highway commute to work everyday and I usually never go below 80 on a highway that is 55, and I go this speed because that's how fast every single other person is going. For anyone familiar w/ Pittsburgh, I take the parkway north, and on 79 before the split, they have at least two cops sit there with their lights on to slow traffic, and still everyone is doing 20-30 mph over the limits, since they don't actually take down speeds (it would be almost impossible to get anyone with the amount of cars).
I could never understand the complete lack of foresight in having the stupid tax break for people who bought oversized gas-guzzling SUVs. It should have been the opposite -- tax break for small fuel-efficient cars.
How about if you buy a car that gets crappy mileage you just shut up about the price of gas?
You would problem get more out of teaching people how to not drive like morons in the city than you would by reducing interstate speeds. Gunning your engine to get to the next red light 2 seconds before the other guy doesn't really help your gas mileage.
Driving at 80+ gets me a great 15 MPG, At least it better than the 8-9 I get doing 30

Completely true. I have an SUV and I'm more than happy to pay current gas prices considering the luxury of having a large car. If I wasn't I'd do something about it instead of complaining. I can't stand when people go on and on about gas. The absolute worst is the news which plays it up day after day. Then people start going on about the huge oil profits, and they look and you funny when you rebutt them by saying that most oil companies have profit margins in the single digits, and remind them that the majority of their mutual funds are heavily invested in the biggest ones, like exxon.

One thing for sure... it will increase revenue for every state through more speeding tickets.

We already have a tax for that, Gas Guzzler tax, On my RS4 it was $2,100, Maserati $3,000. So in truth it's actually double taxed. Still you will never hear me complain about high gas prices. Seems this latest round has finally pushed America to look at other options which should have been done long. More drilling here, alternative energy vehicles, better gas mileage vehicles. I am far more worried about shortages than price. I first started driving in 1978 when we had the second gas crisis and you could not even get gas many days and when you could you had to sit in long lines. I might drive a gas pig but probably use less than many here considering I drive it less than 5k a year

Or accelerating hard to get it into as high as gear as you can to keep your RPMs low again? Of course, this would be on a manual transmission car, so no worries about screwing up the tranny.
