I just went to find some motrin and had to dig through a box of old prescription meds. I didn't realize we had so much in this box, including two bottles of my son's Concerta that he stopped taking in high school, two bottles of Ritalin from when he was a kid, a bottle of vicodin from when I had that kidney stone a few years ago (will never get rid of that because that stone may come back!) and several bottles of allergy meds for my husband.
All this stuff is collecting dust...must get rid of it someday.

What do you guys do with your old meds? Do you keep them thinking you might need them again someday or do you get rid of them? Which ones do you still have?

dh usually saves his forever. then occasionally (under duress) will clean out the old ones and throw them out. you do know that you are not supposed to flush old meds. we just rip the label off and throw them in the trash.

i usually throw out any antibiotic left-overs, but save pain pills for a while.

I keep old Rx meds until they're about 5 years after the exp date.

oops, did not read op right

I'll take the Vicdon off your hands But would get rid of the rest.
The one year expiration is a joke though. I remember when my wife telling me when she worked at the hospital that all the expired medication went to the military hospitals and was fine for years

I usually throw out the old stuff, but the Vicodin would not have a chance to get old at my house. What can I say, Saturday night, a Vike or two, a couple of cold beers, I'm a cheap date!

By my understanding ritalin is now popular with those overachiever 4.0 kids to help them study for tests and stuff. You'd be throwing away money if you got rid of that scott.

I hoard vicodin too. But I can make it last a long time.

This is true. I've heard of people taking Ritalin in order to better study for the LSAT law entry exam.

There was a news story about this same problem within the last few weeks. Many people have been throwing the meds down the sink or toilet and this is having an effect on streams, rivers and lakes not to mention the local water supply/filtration systems. The recommendation is to ask your pharmacy if they accept old meds (they don't have to be in the original containers), or find one that does--most do now and they will dispose of properly.

I hate clutter, so of course I throw them out.

It's about money,so this topic is certainly worth Googling...one example below...

"As I suspected, all along, medicine generaly does not lose effictiveness as soon as it expires.

Here is a critical quote from that page:

Data from the Department of Defense/US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Shelf Life Extension Program, which tests the stability of drug products past their expiration date, showed 84% of 1122 lots of 96 different drug products stored in military facilities in their unopened original container would be expected to remain stable for an average of 57 months after their original expiration date.[25] Some US Army studies on Valium, for example, show that the drug is very stable and completely safe and effective for up to 8 years after manufacture. Tablets of ciprofloxacin, an expensive antibiotic, were found completely safe and effective when tested 9.5 years after the expiration date. " and so on it goes...

As my pharmacist once said...at worst most likely, expired meds may not work as quickly as newly filled scrips.
An ear of corn eaten 24 hours after picking tastes nowhere near as good as pluck and boil...so, don't we still benefit from eating it? and so on and so on...

It is just sitting there in its dusty container if I ever need it again. Husband has some percocet stashed somewhere for something he had done in the past. Again, it's there if ever needed.

And Vicodin could make me last a long time

I put sugar coating over them and use as treats.

I do a clean out every couple of years. I don't know why I keep my percocet, they make me ill when I take them.
