I'm going to be in NY for the first time this weekend and need to figure out how to get where I'm going. I fly into LGA and am staying in Midtown Manhattan near Grand Central. The hotel concierge says it's best to take a cab since the bus from the airport to the subway stops in a not so great part of town......but I see a few different ways to get to the subway from the airport. I'm not overly worried about the price of the cab ride, but at the same time I don't want to drop $70 round trip if I don't have to. Given the price difference between a cab and the bus/subway options, how would you do it?

FWIW, I've spent more than a fair amount of time wandering the streets of large cities and I'm pretty comfortable with that sort of thing. We'll be leaving the airport around 7:30 Friday night.

Thanks!!

hopstop says it's a 30minute walk from the airport to the 7 train.

I've never had to make the trip that you are, but I would personally probably take a taxi or shuttle like this one.

Look here
I would not recommend walking from LGA to any subway stop, while the area is not terrible, would not do it.

If you're a weenie and skeered of black people, take a cab. Or put on your big boy pants and take the M60 bus to 125th St and Lexington. Then take the subway (green line, 4/5/6) to Grand Central. That's not only how I'd do it, but how I did it today.

And no, I won't pick you up at the airport.

"Express Bus from LGA to Manhattan: Inexpensive

New York Airport Service operates express buses every 20-30 minutes from LGA to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, Grand Central Terminal, and Penn Station in Manhattan from 7:20 am to 11 pm. Trips take 50-60 minutes. $12 one-way, $21 round-trip. "

This option out of the hopstop link is the best choice: it is 1/3 of cab fare and almost same time. It drops off at grand central. You can take a cab ($5-$10) to your hotel from there if you have luggage.

A true FWer would never even consider paying $12 for a shuttle when there's a city bus available at the same place for $2 (free transfer to the subway).

That's probably what I'll do. When someone says that the transfer is "not in a great part of town" (or however he phrased it), it could mean any number of things. Since I don't know this guy, I was simply looking for clarification. Making a transfer in Harlem doesn't scare me, it actually sounds interesting. I'm always up for seeing new places.

Thanks for the info guys!!

A buddy from Alabama is going up with me to see the Yankees this weekend. I'm flying in from California on an award ticket. We wound up on different airlines. Yada, yada yada. The best combination of flight times put us into LGA.

You also could also take a cab to Woodside at 61 Street/Roosevelt Avenue and run upstairs to the 7 train - take that to Grand Central or Times Square. You can also take LIRR to Penn Station (cost more than subway and less frequent).

(The cabbie at Laquardia will be pissed that he is getting a short trip but he can get a ticket from the dispatcher so he can get to the front of the line again.)

I've always taken a cab in to the hotel, then the hotel's shuttle out to the airport . . . but then again, it has never been on my dime.

How much luggage will you be traveling with? Regardless of what part of town you are heading through, no one wants to scream "tourist." And I was mugged in a "fine upstanding" part of town so bad part of town doesn't mean anything to me.

Also another option is the SuperShuttle. I am not a big fan although I did it only once. With a coupon it cost me $18 including tip but that was to Newark one way. Might want to consider it heading back to the airport.

Take the bus to 74th street Jackson Heights from there transfer to the EFVGR7 train(s). The area isn't that bad, I guess it would depend on what time you got in at. However, I do see alot of people carrying luggage in the transit system now-a-days in NYC..

alert mods

For the luggage question, I'm probably just going to carry a backpack. It's just a weekend trip, I don't need that much. My buddy will probably have about the same.

I'm still not sure what we'll do, but at least we have several options now.

125th and Lex is a very safe place. It's right near the subway station and a big Pathmark supermarket. 7:30 PM is a safe time. So do what Moonbeam said. I've done it too and the only drawback is that the bus can take a long time.

For the subway part, try to get a 4 or 5 train because they're express whereas the 6 is a local. You wait for them in the same area.

I found this info HERE

Fiorello LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, 718/533-3400

This is New York's second-largest airport, serving more than 20 airlines to mostly domestic destinations, Canada and the Caribbean. It is on the northern shore of Queens, directly across the East River about 9 miles from midtown Manhattan. Follow signs marked "Ground Transportation" as you exit the airport.

Taxi
Metered fare; $16-26 plus bridge and tunnel tolls and gratuity; 20-25 minutes to midtown Manhattan. 212/NYC-TAXI (212/692-8294)
One fare covers all passengers. Accept taxi ride offers only from uniformed airport agents and only in yellow medallion taxis. Do not accept rides from people who approach you in the airport if you have not booked a private car service in advance. Tipping is not mandatory, but a 15%-20% gratuity is expected.

Public Bus
$2 (free transfer from subway); 20-25 minutes to Queens subway connections; 60-75 minutes to Upper East Side and Upper West Side subway connections; add another 15-20 minutes for subway into Midtown. 718/330-1234 or 718/335-1000; non-English, 718/330-4847
The MTA offers two choices for transportation between LaGuardia and Manhattan. Follow the airport signs to "Ground Transportation." The MTA's M60 bus stops in front of all terminals (look for MTA bus stop marked "M60 to Manhattan"); service is available between 5am and 1am. The bus makes stops in Manhattan on the East Side at Lexington Avenue and 125th Street (connect here to the 4, 5 and 6 subway lines to Grand Central Terminal in Midtown); the bus continues to the West Side, stopping at St. Nicholas Avenue, where you can transfer to the A, B, C and D subway lines; last stop is Broadway and 106th Street, where connections can be made to the 1, 2 and 3 subway lines.

Another alternative is a bus service between LaGuardia and subway connections in Queens. Stops are in front of each terminal, marked "Q33" and "Q48." The Q33 bus goes to the Roosevelt Avenue subway station for the E and F subway lines. The Q48 goes to 74th Street and Broadway in Queens for the 7 subway line.

AirLink New York
$16-20 one-way fare; 45-60 minutes to midtown Manhattan. 877/599-8200, 212/812-9000
Share-ride airport service between airport and hotels in Manhattan.

From airports: Go to ground transportation desk. See staff or use Airlink NY courtesy phone to connect to dispatcher for pick-up directly outside the terminal.

From midtown/hotel: Reservations are required 24 hours in advance of pick-up. Visit www.airlinknyc.com for more information.

New York Airport Service
$10-13 to Midtown; $17-23 for hotel shuttle service; 30-35 minutes to midtown Manhattan. 718/875-8200, 800/872-4577
Bus to Manhattan and shuttle to/from JFK and LaGuardia airports and midtown hotels.

From airports: At the airports, New York Airport Service bus stops are located outside the baggage claim area at every terminal; look for a bus stop sign that says New York Airport Service. Buses run approximately every 20-25 minutes and make stops at Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station and Port Authority Bus Station.

For transfer service to hotels: Take shuttle to Grand Central; transfer is available to midtown hotels for an additional fee.

From Midtown to airports: Service is available from Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station and Port Authority Bus Terminal.

From midtown hotels to airports: You can either make a round-trip reservation upon arrival at airport Ground Transportation area or call from Midtown; 24-hour advance reservation for pick-up is required.

SuperShuttle
$15-20 one-way fare; 30-35 minutes to midtown Manhattan. 800/258-3826, 212/315-3006
Door-to-door airport transfers. From airports: Go to Ground Transportation desk and use SuperShuttle courtesy phone to connect to dispatcher, who will arrange for your pick-up directly outside the terminal. From Midtown/hotel: Reservations are required, 24 hours in advance of pick-up. Visit www.supershuttle.com for more information.

If more people took that advice, there'd be far fewer problems in the world.

We took the M60 to Lex and 125th, then the 6 to 51st Street (closer to the hotel. No problems at all. We took the 4 train up to the stadium today. The game was amazing!! The Yankees won it in 12 thanks to a batter hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. First time that's happened since 1965 they said. The experience of going to Yankee Stadium was everything I could have asked for.

Tomorrow morning we're taking a cab back to the airport. The bus service was really slow and we don't want to risk missing our flights. Thanks to everyone for the advice!

BTW Moonbeam, I tried to bring you a couple of pistols but the TSA at SJC didn't like that idea too much.
