A friend of mine recently saw a John Mayer concert and I was talking to her about it. It got me to thinking...

How much do the members of his band actually make??

I'm fully aware that John Mayer is the big name and is getting a big chunk of the money. But how is the rest of it divided up? There is like a guy that just plays piano for a few songs and another guy that just plays the sax for a few songs. What kind of money does that warrant? And does anyone actually know how much john mayer makes from each show? Does he get like a flat rate from the venue or is it like he gets $10 from each ticket??

The numbers are all over the place. Some have an equity position in the band, others are just contracted for a tour, some are studio musicians and get paid scale.

Performance fees are also varied. The act might be guaranteed a minimum with a % of the gate. Depends on who the producer is, the venue, the draw of the artist, etc.

There are as many ways to structure those deals as there are artists.

And somehow a few cents makes it's way down to the security staff! I don't work for free!

Is any of this information published anywhere? I know that the dave Matthews band splits all money equally with all members. However I just don't see that happening with john Mayer (but I could be wrong). How much does they guy playing the piano get? $200/hr during concerts??

Well, the Dave Matthews Band is all about the whole band, not just one guy. Whereas, when you go see John Mayer, who cares who is playing the piano?

If they are really good, they get all the women's underwear they need . . . sometimes they even get to remove it from the owner.

In 49 of the 50 states, that's better than money, since it's illegal to buy 'favors'.

People go there to see DAVE. He is the main attraction of the band itself. He has gone on sell out tours by himself (without the band). The violinist 'Boyd Tinsley' came out with a CD that while good did not sell very well. If he (Body Tinsley) went on tour it would be nothing the same as that of the solo Dave Matthews act. Recently LeRoi Moore on Saxophone was hurt and has not been able to play. The band has filled in with a replacement and is continuing to tour. If Dave himself was hurt and unable to play all concerts would be suspended until he healed.

I would equate this much to the same with Bono and U2. Yes they are a band but he is the main draw.

I'll be working DMB soon. SL is right if her point of view is that of DMB, meaning he sees his band mates as equals when they are all on the stage together, whereas John Mayer can hire anyone to be backup and it doesn't matter from show to show.

DMB each get equal money if I remember correctly, and they cost a LOT (about $100k per person IIRC).. that's why you see a lot of concerts with just Dave Matthews.. because that way, it's much cheaper. Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds do just as good of a job IMO.
