So should I not buy from Tyson because their AMERICAN workers (yes they were originally from Somalia, but I'm pretty sure they have to obtain Citizenship to work here (hence making them Americans), and I doubt Tyson will sponsor 400+ H1 visas.) requested an exchange of holidays backed by their union and approved by Tyson a PRIVATELY OWNED company? :rolls-eyes: Also, they would've taken off their Muslim holiday anyways (on the employees' own expense) and the plant would nearly be shut down, due to the lack of employees in the plant. Hence, making this more of a strategic business move rather than a religious accommodation.

It seems that they chose Labor Day because it looks like to be the closest calendar holiday to coincide with the Muslim Eid, and Ramadan's first day is on the same day as Labor Day. So it sounds logical that they would rather work on a holiday and compensate that day for their day of celebration of the end of the fasting (i.e. Eid). Using MLK's birthday, Christmas, etc. wouldn't really be as close "calendar wise" as Labor day.

Also not knowing the full details as to why Labor day was picked instead of a day like Columbus day for example (I don't know if Tyson's factory has off that day anyways). But my presumption is that since the Muslim calendar year follows a lunar calendar rather than a Gregorian one, Ramadan will start about 12 days earlier in 2009 than this year (i.e. sometime around late August), so this will make the Eid fall on sometime mid to late September. Hence, making it, again, around the same time as Labor day. This coincides well for the next several years.

As for the "boycotting" by certain individuals here, I wonder if they'll boycott Kosher foods, now that the "US' biggest supplier of kosher meat is accused of exploiting employees, tolerating illegally hiring teenagers. 'They refuse to accept responsibility for anything that is going on in that plant,' spokesman for Food and Commercial Workers union says "

Muslim civil rights advocates criticized Tyson Foods, and a union official said the company's response was disingenuous.

"...It seems that this backtracking would be the result of the backlash from anti-Muslim hate (Web) sites and Islamophobes on the Internet," said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for Washington D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations."

So which of those is FatWallet? Is it a hate site or is it just full of Islamophobes?

reading all the comments on that website just shows how hateful we americans can be.
Its no wonder why our image to the rest of the world is suffering...but thats what happens when we blame others for our own problems.

I thought it was a great move on Tyson's part...showed that it made financial sense and an open mind to address the needs of its work force. Too bad all the haters got up in arms about it...now if only we could get all the anti-islam people to start promoting energy independence and stop buying fuel consuming SUVs we could actually achieve something.

Historically speaking hate and fear how pushed us into many mistakes in our great history as a nation.

Yes our country is so bad that is why people are trying to come here anyway they can from all over the world.
Other countries should refuse or foreign aid if they dislike us so much and also guarantee their own defense.

It was a great move on Tyson's part to include Eid al-Fitr for this year. It was even better when they guaranteed a personal holiday for every employee.

There is no reason why everyone shouldn't be promoting energy independence. Why should the pocketbooks of every American be lining the pockets of foreign countries? Lord knows Exxon isn't exactly sharing their wealth with most Americans let alone the Gulf [oil] states. Detroit's automakers wouldn't be in such dire states now if they had energy efficient cars for sale instead of gas hogging SUVs.

This country can't be so arrogant to think that we haven't made mistakes and aren't capable of owning up to them. Nor can we ignore the possibility that we can still be leaders when it comes to world leadership in conservation and alternative energy, not to mention human rights, peaceful and democratic transitions of power [just watch next January 20th ].

The Somalis probably came here with refugee visas, which allow them to work. They remain foreign nationals unless they acquire U.S. citizenship.

"...It seems that this backtracking would be the result of the backlash from anti-Muslim hate (Web) sites and Islamophobes on the Internet," said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for Washington D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations."
Hooper is an islamist provocateur, no sense paying attention to him or his organization. Of more importance are these facts from the article:

Tyson had previously agreed to drop Labor Day and substitute the Muslim holiday as part of a new 5-year contract to accommodate Muslim workers at the plant in Shelbyville, which is about 50 miles south of Nashville. The decision sparked widespread criticism, from local politicians to talk radio to the Internet.

The Springdale, Ark.-based company said it requested reinstating Labor Day after complaints from plant workers and the public.

Union members voted Thursday to reinstate Labor Day as one of the plant's paid holidays and keep Eid al-Fitr as an additional paid holiday for this year only. For the remainder of the contract, workers will have Labor Day and a personal holiday, which can be used to observe Eid al-Fitr or another day the employee's supervisor approves.
