I'm betting they are as American as you and me, just different types of Americans. |

Someone over there wasn't thinking too straight when they replaced Labor Day, a Federal secular holiday, with a religious day.
If this were a Christian holiday the ACLU would be in court arguing that Tyson violated the rights of the other workers.Did you even bother to read the story? It was the workers who requested the change.Yes, I read the story, and it prefaces my point that the ACLU would take the issue to court if it were a Christian holiday. |

Why Christmas is even considered a Federal holiday is beyond me. It IS a religious holy day, not a secular holiday.FYI, Christmas is a Federal holiday because Congress enacted it into law. Don't take jmy word, you can look it up yourself. |

Everyone taking off for both Labor Day and Eid al-Fitr instead of just one of those two days would shut the factory down for one additional day, reducing productivity.pkny said:...Please correct me if i am wrong. It refers to the Somali employees (who are here legally as refugees, see the other articles linked on the page) as Somali. They represent approximately 250 of the 700 Muslim employees of the plant. As legal refugees, they are presumably on the path to citizenship. Fortunately, in America people who are here legally have rights. |

Fortunately, in America people who are here legally have rights.I doubt very much these folks are interested in becoming citizens, otherwise they'd be adopting American values by (for instance) observing the same American holidays the rest of us celebrate. I'm sure there are Somali refugess who want to become Americans, but they don't seem to in the majority among those who voted to ditch Labor Day. |

So they should celebrate Labor Day over Eid, which happens to be one of their holiest days? Would you like your Christmas taken away for Labor Day? Get over it. It was the workers union's decision. |

Birthday New Year's Day Martin Luther King Jr. Day Memorial Day Independence Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Day Labor Day No matter which holiday you choose to give up, someone's going to have a problem with it. Since 700 or the 1200 employees are Muslim, they could easily have voted to get rid of Christmas, since Christmas has the least significance for Muslims, but they didn't. They chose the holiday which most Americans celebrate on the weekend. Goodwill gestures like this are more effective at ending terrorism than dropping bombs. Do you want to bet that there are now 700 Muslims who are less likely to support the terrorists? When the fanatics call for all Muslims to kill the evil Americans, I can think of 700 Muslims who will ignore the call. |

Did not realize so many Muslims lived in the bible belt Southeast. Blows me away by those numbers, is it the community or does TYSON draw employees from other areas? |
