So I am trying to remember the name of an old cartoon I used to watch as a kid...I would say mid 80s-mid 90s

It was a team of hawks or falcons (I believe outerspace related), I believe the leader had a blue cape, one had a red cape, and there was another? They also all wore something that looked like space ace motorcycle helmets

And no I am not talking about silver hawks (also an awesome show)

This is considered "old"? Basically the old cartoons I remember were one step up from those flip cards that caused the animation

That looks like a combo of Thundercats and Silverhawks.

Mark, Jason, Princess, Tiny and Keop! My favorite cartoon!

My grandmother never wanted to let me watch it because it was too "violent".

That was the 70's version. Sandy Frank bought the rights to the Japanese footage and dubbed them in English. A lot of the violence was actually removed. A lot of the story lines were also changed to the point where they no longer resembled the original story.

During the mid to late 80's they re-did it, but this time, they were allowed to leave in a lot more of the violence and stayed more along the original story lines. Other chances: Keop actually spoke like a normal person. The English names of all the characters were changed (even Zoltar had a different name), and no more 7-zark-7 (which was actually produced in America spliced onto the old footage).
