Which would be why FWOT is no longer FWOT. I would think that DevilMonkey's statement also coincides with showing respect to the OP. Seeing joke after joke after you've done lots of work/research on your thread could be disappointing to some. Meaningful discussion type of threads don't pop up very often in OT. Should threads like the "Reuse or Repurpose" have a place of their own besides OT? Deal Discussion if frugal (since we are a deal site and it's all about saving money) |

I think humor is a really effective tool for communicating. I think it could have been used to enhance the discussion and keep it fun. Unfortunately, it turned into a game of out-useless-ing the previous comment. Still fine, until it continued after a moderator had asked everyone to put on the brakes and try to leave the discussion in tact.
Does this distinction make sense at all?I wasn't referring to any specific comment. There is no guarantee that either meaningful or humorous comments carry weight or hit their target. Are we censoring all the misses now? |

VBMcGB said:The biggest issue on our end that led to the deletions isn't whether the posts where humorous, but because the OP wanted to have a thread filled with good ideas. When the number of humorous posts outnumbers the sincere suggestions, it makes the thread worthless. Therefore, the non-relevant posts were removed, and the thread was moved to DD (even though it technically would go into OT).
Right now, the first thing I want to make sure of is that everyone understands what happened and why.How about when the number of OPs replies in his own thread outnumbers the number of other members replies? Because that thread now has a total of seven replies (excluding the one from the mod), FOUR of which are from the OP himself. Doesn't seem very constructive to me. |

why was this topic locked: http://beta.fatwallet.com/forums/off-topic/934359/ under the: Moderator Comment: If you wish to discuss the action taken, please send in a support ticket. Thanks! I don't see any difference between the topics, and mine was locked and this one had moderator discussion, which is what I wanted. |

Doesn't seem very constructive to me.As long as the suggestions are legit ways of living frugally, I don't see why this would be a problem. Ideally, multiple suggestions would be in one post, but it isn't necessary.

I don't see any difference between the topics, and mine was locked and this one had moderator discussion, which is what I wanted.Originally, we locked this thread. But, since this is a relatively unique instance, we thought it best to reopen it to discuss why the "Reuse" thread was an anomaly. Basically, we have a situation where the OP wants to have a serious thread, which so happened to fit best under the OT umbrella. OTers treated it like a typical OT thread. We tried to let everyone know what we wanted to happen. Apparently we didn't communicate that well enough, and posts were deleted. Confusion ensued. Now, we're having a conversation so that everyone understands what happened and why. This is why this thread is currently open.
In the case of the thread you linked to, that isn't related to a unique situation that needed a public explanation. If you don't understand why a post was removed under normal circumstances, the appropriate thing to do is to send in a Support Ticket and ask, rather than creating a thread in OT.

Yeah, this will probably be removed because it isn't contructive.Sorry if I wasn't clear on this earlier: I happen to like the jokes, the asides, the meaningless replies in OT. I think it very much is what FWOT is about. I tried to explain it by saying the random comments were *still OK* as far as I was concerned, but that when we'd asked to let the thread go back on topic, that was when it crossed the line. The cleaning up had *nothing* to do with any ulterior motives... it was moved to Deal Discussion, where we thought the topic belonged. In its new home, most people should be expecting discussions to remain at least somewhat on topic, and a string of funny (some more than others) but unhelpful replies didn't seem to make sense. So nothing was overly offensive or inappropriate or even 'unworthy' of FWOT. It simply wasn't useful to the discussion, and the discussion was moved to more 'formal' areas of the site. |
