Let me first state that I have the greatest of sympathy for this mother. I cannot fathom how she must be feeling right now.
But still....is it just me?
Would you allow your 7 yr. old child to walk one mile through a neighborhood that has 75 known sex offenders in a five mile radius? A neighborhood where an attempt was made to lure another child into a car just 10 days ago?
All I can say is no way in HELL my kid would be walking with no adult supervision. Not even for one block. Not even half a block.
It's not 1955 Mayberry anymore folks!

Oh nice!! Just found out that the other attempt to take a child was only ONE BLOCK away from this child's route.
WHY? WHY? WHY would her mother let her walk there??!
Also, and this may be just me, but does anyone else think it's weird to give a 7yo girl a backpack that's black with pink and white skulls and crossbones on it?

Well, actually that's on a lot of girl stuff right now. Very popular. Some of the skull/crossbones even have a bow on them, like the skull is wearing it in its hair. They are very much targeted toward girls.
My daughter is 9 yrs. old so I see a LOT of it out there. She doesn't like it, btw.

only difference is that in 1955 no one 'knew' abotu the sex offenders. I doubt its a new trend. Just one more talked about.

It's not safe for a cute tiny 15 yr old to walk alone. It's only been the last year that she was able to walk the neighborhood with a friend.
IMO, a mother who does this is either entirely clueless, entirely too trusting, or too wrapped up in her own issues (boyfriends, drug use, etc) to care.

Actually, stranger abductions are fairly rare. 115 total in 2002. As far as dangers go, there are much more dangerous things to protect kids from than stranger abductions, and if anything I think most parents are overly paranoid about them. They should be more worried about their kids getting hit by a car or drowning in a bucket.

Can't agree with you there, MA. Stats are only stats til it's your kid. A parent's number one nightmare is that something happens to one of their kids. We spend a lot of time making sure it doesn't. As this case (and so many others) illustrate, it takes one lapse of judgment at the wrong time and suddenly, your kid has gone missing or is found dead.
Rare or not, I don't think some added paranoia is a bad thing. I'm not gonna keep them in a bubble, but common sense dictates that there needs to be some concern.

This boils my blood. I don't think punishments are severe enough for people who hurt kids. There is something basic missing from these people that excludes them from being human.

The kid could never be found.
I agree. This is happening too often. I know they all have their own circumstances, but man... Parents need to be more aware of what's going on in the world today. There seems to be a lot of high profile cases in my area lateley - this one, Haleigh cummings, christopher barrios ( thankfully that one has been solved and the bast@rd got the death penalty)...

A bullet to the back of the head, delivered quicker than 15-20 years after conviction, is what the killer desperately needs. Forget about deterrents, inhumane punishment, costs, etc. This type of person has proven that he/she just needs to be removed from the planet.
I am so angry with this story. The child they found in the dump was indeed the little girl.
When my son was around 5, someone told me, "you sure keep tight reigns on him." When he was outside playing I wouldn't let him walk to the corner or near the street alone, he had to stay in the yard so I could see him from the window if I wasn't with him.
You bet I had "tight reigns" on him...I wish these parents did the same.
I live near an elementary school. Kindergartner's aren't allowed to leave w/o the parent, but that's where it stops. I'm always amazed the little 6 year old first graders+ that walk home alone. Today anything can happen.
MSNBC: "The partially covered body of the child was found at a site near the Florida state line, after investigators followed garbage trucks leaving from the neighborhood where Thompson disappeared Monday."
MSNBC: "Thompson vanished on her mile-long walk home from school Monday in Orange Park. She was squabbling with another child, and her sister told her to stop. The girl got upset, walked ahead of the group and wasn't seen again."
It's amazing the tools and/or ideas investigators use anymore to find a body.
Got to wonder how the sister is feeling today knowing that her attempt at helping her sister behave is what caused her sister to separate from the group. I can only hope some clown doesn't try to make her feel like it is her fault.
Her mom is on the Today Show this morning. She has done several interviews, and you can tell she is deeply hurting, but she is able to stand and answer questions and talk about this case like it was six months old. I don't know how she's doing it...doubt I could.

She is definately heartbroken, but right now the anger seems to be the dominating emotion and I think that's what is driving her. That woman is mad as hell! When she looked into the camera and told the person that commited this crime that they were coming after them....I believed her.
Also, it probably hasn't *really* sunk in yet. I would say she's heading for a huge breakdown very soon.

ORANGE PARK, FL--- Ever since 7-year-old Somer Thompson disappeared, there has been an outpouring of support from members of the First Coast community. Hundreds of people showed up Sunday at Orange Park Town Hall for a fundraiser. Southern Rock band Molly Hatchet was among the faces.
Molly Hatchet is a Jacksonville-based band, who wanted to show their support of Somer. They drove all night to remember the young girl. Part of that support included donating more than 40 memorabilia items for auction, including a personalized autographed guitar. The guitar raised $1,000 for Somer's family.
Lead guitarist and band owner Bobby Ingram said he has never seen a community come together so well. Ingram said, "I've seen something here I haven't seen anywhere else, and we travel all over the world. We've seen bonding and a brotherhood in this community. Everybody's helping each other."
This one is a 7 month old so it's not like a kid walking home from school getting snatched (thankfully). Also, the parent's story of a Halloween theft of the child as she was sleeping is not adding up. There was no forced entry, parents went to bed at 3am (partying?) and they haven't made any public pleas for the return of their child.
MajorDarkside said: Sorry, but do we really need a physical description of a 7 month old????? Why wouldn't there be one? I'm not following you on this thought...
Could be that a parent checked on the baby after waking in the night at 3 am. If I wake in the night I check my little ones. On the other hand, I cannot recall any of my kids ever sleeping without a peep until 11 am. I get nervous and check on them if they sleep until 9am.
This 7 month old was extremely small for her age. I would never see a baby that small and connect her with a missing 7 month old.

That really stood out to me as well. One of my babies weighed 11 lbs. at his 6 week checkup. This child was 7 months and only 11 lbs? Surely that was a misprint.

The baby supposedly may have a medical problem acc. to something I heard on the news. The head is oversized for the weight/body size.
Bensmom, The parents did not wake at 3am to check the baby...they did not go to bed until 3am! This was halloween night, which might suggest they were partying until late at night. I also find it very interesting that the child could possibly sleep until 11am. That is not normal for a baby.
Update: Baby found in alive in box under mom's bed. Some adults are just plain scumbags and somehow should be prevented from procreating.

Virginia State Police confirm that a partially skeletonized body has been found on an Albemarle County farm and that forensic teams are on the scene. Police have blocked off access to Anchorage Farm off of Route 29 in southern Albemarle County.
State Police crime scene technicians arrived at Anchorage Farm and are searching for evidence using a grid mapping technique. NBC29 has been told unofficially that the body appears to be that of a young woman with long blonde hair.
Dan Harrington tells NBC29 he and his wife Gil are on their way to Albemarle County to identify the body found this morning and says it is likely their daughter Morgan, who went missing 101 days ago in Charlottesville after a Metallica concert.
ETA: Authorities confirm they have reason to believe it is Morgan Harrington. Sad.
ETA2: As more details emerge, it looks like this crime almost had to be commited by a local to that area. The farm had to have been familiar to the perp...very remote, very inaccessible, and hard to find. Someone knew that body wouldn't be found there for a long time.

I totally agree. She wasn't taken away and dumped by the side of the road. She was taken by someone local who did this. WAY too remote an area.
Kayleah (Kay LEE uh) Wilson was last seen Sunday afternoon, when she left her Greeley home to go to a birthday party just across a busy highway from her apartment building.
The middle school student is 5-foot-1, weighs 145 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes. Authorities say Kayleah has asthma and was believed to be carrying an inhaler. She doesn't have a cell phone.
Kayleah's case is not the first missing-child case in Greeley. Jonelle Matthews, 12, disappeared on Dec. 20, 1984, and was never found. That case remains unsolved.
We live in a fairly small town and kids pretty much get free reign where ever they go. Apparently there was a black SUV driving around offering kids candy. Someone got a pic of the license plate and called the police. The plates came back as stolen. People are still letting their kids walk around without adults!
