What features should I look for? Are any brands considered better than others? Is it even worth it, or does it make more sense to just get a safety deposit box at a bank?

a personal safe is good, but you want to bolt it to the floor.

you should check saferatings.com and use only cash.
make sure you can lift it up the stairs, otherwise you might get a hernia and post "got a hernia lifting safe, qualify for disability?" on FWF

Find one with a lot of money inside already.

Look for one that is safe enough.

What is the primary purpose: to keep valuables out of easy reach of others or keeping papers safe in case of fire?

But how does a safe keep the temp inside any cooler than the temp outside? It is not as if there is refrigeration going on inside. (This is a serious question and I know the answer too. )

Try to find a safe with a nice combination of features.

Make sure you lock in a low rate, if you have to finance it.

The title was meant as a parody, but the post is semi serious. The big thing is I have some papers that I access frequently as well as a hard drive that has back up of various data (including some pretty sensitive financial info) that I don't want to lose in a fire or to theft (although I am more concerned by fire). It probably would not see much use to protect valuable besides maybe some in case of emergency cash. Because I access these things frequently it is a bit of a pain to keep them in a safety deposit box.
