This JCrew cashmere hoodie (item 17859) costs $198 and, other than an occasional return that pops up on the website, it sold out at full price in every size and color. This pullover version actually costs $10 more than the zip front version, even though the manufacturing costs would be less without the zipper. While I really like it and own it in both light grey and camel , I'm surprised there are that many other foolish and extravagant people out there. It seems kind of boring and basic, and a similar version could probably be found at a much lower price. Why did it sell out?

Supply and demand. Evidently, $198 is a market-clearing price for the quantity available.

Although I personally balk at paying more than $12 for a hoodie.

It sounds like you are wondering this because you want to buy another one. This makes your question a little silly, no?

The basic answer is that America is full of people who love to buy crap they don't really need for prices that are more than what they should be paying. Most of the American economy is based on this fact.

LOL, no, I already own 2 of them.

$198 for that? Was that for a box of 10 of them or what?

no, $396 for two of them. Pay attention.

ETA: yesterday I found out that my wife's 1992 plymouth acclaim (book value roughly $350) needs $500 worth of work to run again. So instead of having the work done, we're looking to buy another used car in the $300-500 range.

Aw-kward!!

And it is pretty clear you want a third and maybe a fourth. How else would you know "This JCrew cashmere hoodie (item 17859) costs $198 and, other than an occasional return that pops up on the website, it sold out at full price in every size and color."

Don't be ashamed, I for one thank you for keeping the American economy afloat.

Obviously you don't understand women. Men shop because they need or want to buy something. Women shop because they like to shop. Just because I browse their website frequently and know the details of their merchandise selection intimately, that doesn't mean I have any intention of actually buying.

I can't really argue that.

Actually, men shop because they need or want to GET some...thing

Costco has some cashmere sweaters right now... Also, Nordstrom Rack. Quality doesn't have to cost a lot.

Exactly. Great deals on cashmere sweaters are available everywhere. That's why I thought it was strange that this particular sweater sold out at full price. If it was on sale for 75% off, I'd understand, but it's not a "deal" and the style is fairly ordinary.

you forgot that most people leave common sense behind when they shop at JCrew. Not everyone is a FatWalleter (and I feel sorry for them, except on Black Friday)

Maybe they only have 2-3 of them when it's in stock.

i can't afford to shop at jcrew...

Are you classing yourself with the "other foolish and extravagent people" you mentioned in your OP?

Well, yes, of course I was. Wasn't that obvious? And grey and camel aren't boring. They're two of my favorite colors.
