If he does file an unpaid item alert, be sure to respond with the PayPal transaction ID showing you paid. eBay now allows sellers to issue strikes without eBay review, so you may need to appeal the strike if you get one. That payment ID will allow you to do so.

If you believe you did pay in accordance with stated listing terms, you can also file a report for abuse of the UID credit system here.

Here is an eBay motors story. Won an auction and paid deposit, $500, thru paypal. When I went to pick it up, car was in pretty bad shape and pictures on the listing turned out to be very deceiving. Demanded a refund from seller but he refused. Though listing stated there is no refund, I was confident paypal would help me out since the item was not as described.

Here is the fun part, according to paypal rules, car is an intangible item so you are not covered if something goes wrong. When you go with eBay motors insurance thing, I am not covered either since I did not pay the full auction amount and did not receive the item. On the top that, that no refund clause in the listing was also used an excuse. This guy was professional crook, used card dealer, and taught me good lesson though I am a long time ebayer. Paypal CS was clueless about my questions and confirmed that this is a way of cheating people and they do nothing about it.

Long story short, luckely my paypal payment funded with bank account and wife urged me to talk with the bank. Thanks God, got the payment reversed. later my paypal balance became -500, told them the seller never shipped the item. since there is no shipment, i had no liability to anyone. Closed that paypal account and opened new one without giving out my social.

Since then I don't keep any money in my paypal account.

What do I do when seller has shipped an item to me by Priority mail (without insurance) with tracking and tracking says that the item has been delivered to my zipcode, but I have not received the item?

Ask your neighbors if they received it, & if they haven't, go down to the post office to ask them. If the item was less than $250, & USPS indicates it's been delivered to your zip, you will likely not win an INR claim. Unless it's an inexpensive item, & you do a lot of buying through eBay/PayPal, in which case PayPal might just eat the cost themselves.

I bought one stuff more than 200 hundred. Very weird was that Fedex left it on the ground of the building without any signature, I did not know when it came. By accidence, I found one large box standing on the ground, I went down stair and looked around. Hey, it was what i bought. I took the box upstair, opened and it is a new brand as AD. It works very well.

What the hey, I am glad to be happy for you that came a box so good...

I needed a Staples coupon to complete a purchase. I bought one within 5 minutes and paid with pay pal immediately. Then I waited and waited and waited. The auction description said that they would e-mail the coupon code when payment was received. I contacted the seller through e-bay but got no response. I went to their auction store and sent them an e-mail. They replied that the didn't know I would need the coupon code immediately and that they had it at work. The following morning, the coupon code was e-mailed to me at 8 am. I immediatly placed the order but by then the items were out of stock. Am I just being impatient to expect that coupon code to be in an an e-mail to me the same day I completed the transaction? Every other time I have purchased a coupon, it was returned virtually immediately. Thanks for your reply!

rated:

S**t happens and, unfortunately, you have to wipe it off. You do not seem to be angry, when you have every right to be...receiving the code the next day may satisfy the sale but, does fall way short of expectations when most others send the coupon almost immediately upon purchase. It's a shame that you missed the deal and it cost you money...

I won a listing containing 3 "store returned" opened box wii remotes "look to be in excellent conditions". Received them very quickly, then voila 2 of of 3 did not work. Contact seller - very nice woman who said right away "that's not the way I do business" & a promise a partial refund & I don't have to ship them back (wat am I going to do with them now!?). well, my pp acct is frozen by paypal due to some stupid (but really funny) reason so no refund is received yet. But it's a pretty good feeling to know good people still exist on eBay.

Seller listed a defective item and I paid with CC thru' Paypal. I filed SNAD and paypal required me to ship it back on my own expense before seller will refund me. Any way I can get out of the return freight charges(18 pounds). Should I just get a credit card charge back? Thanks!

rated:

Your CC company may also require you to ship it back.

Thank you very much for the quick reply! If I mail it back and paypal make the seller refund me, would they credit my cc back or put money in my paypal account? If they put money back in my Paypal account, can I file CC dispute to get back the shipping charge? Thanks!

Can I file a complaint thru' eBay? Would eBay do anything?

Do I just eat up the return shipping cost? What else can I do?

rated:

If you ship back with tracking/DC after PayPal tells ou to do so, then you will get back up to $200 (or $2k, depending on the BPP terms) for the original payment (item price + shopping). You will not get back your return ship fee.

If you paid by CC originally, I believe the refund is credited back to the CC, but I may be wrong on that.

No, you cannot file a chargeback to recover the money you pay in return shipping.

You can file a nonperforming seller complaint through eBay, but that will not get you your return ship fee back.

I sold an item couple of weeks back and I have not recd any FB. that concerns me. I think he may even file SNAD claim. I only got signature confirmation since this was under $200. I asked him to leave FB but had not done so.

I wouldn't worry too much about not getting feedback. I often don't get feedback. As long as you have your tracking numbers, you'll be fine.

Separately, why are you concerned that the buyer will file SNAD? When I ship something, I can't think of a time when I would expose myself to an SNAD.

I just bought iphone 3g for about $400 after using 10% and 30% CashBack yesterday. The seller had 0 rating but had many items for sale on his website. Today morning i got email from eBay & paypal stating that my transaction is under review because the listing has been removed from eBay. I checked for the sellers name and found that all of his listing was removed. Paypal has put the transaction on hold, but my credit card shows the debit. What is the best course of action?

rated:

I would call Paypal and your credit card company just to have a record of what is going on.

Your post struck a chord... I also list the description clearly enough... but I see SNAD as a catchall return reason for any sale made on eBay (I don't sell more than 8-10 items a year on eBay, but buy probably 20 a year)

What else do you recommend to not be exposed to SNAD ?

I bought a book which listed as "Ship via USPS Priority Mail", however, it came Media Mail and took almost a month. And the book got beaten up. Difference of the postage: 2 pounds Media Mail $2.76 Priority $4.99.

I don't want to return it since I need it for class, but I really unhappy about this situation. Beside a neg, what can I do? Thanks!

Hit the seller's DSRs as appropriate.

Were you charged for S&H? If so, I would ask for a S&H refund.

Very well done article...pretty much covers most buyer abuse tactics for both eBay and Amazon. Regarding the warranties bit, you also (usually) can get warranty service if what you buy comes with a warranty card eg. Samsung and Audio-Technica. Also, if you're buying from a *real* authorized dealer (check with the manufacturer), this will also qualify you for warranty service (in combination with an order-confirmation) even if you don't get a hard-receipt.

How long to wait with a seller that's either not there or ignoring you? 10 days gone by after a purchase and no response to 2 messages (through eBay) and no indication that the item has shipped. Seller claims same day/next day shipment in their listing, but there's no way NC-PA takes over 10 days unless he sent it by carrier snail.

EDIT: nevermind...damning feedback just turned up from another buyer (non-shipment), so I started the dispute through Paypal (and they already escalated automatically so it appears his account is already in deep doo-doo)

Just had a seller refuse to honor winning bid because it was too low. Ebays answer after filing seller non-performance complaint- Leave him negative feedback. "Duh" Legal mumbo-jumbo "buyer and seller" enter a contract- Is there any other recourse. I am planning to file a complaint against the seller with BBB.org (he's been an accredited member for 10 years with no record of complaints).

Beware of "engineered feedback".

I purchased a large gift card from a seller with good feedback. I saw that they had sold the same card and received positive feedback for it. When the seller stopped communication and I didn't receive the item, I looked at their feedback again. The person that left the feedback for the gift card was selling loads of Chinese electronics that very much resembled the types of items that my seller typically sold.

Sometimes it is necessary to dig a little deeper. I was refunded after a claim with paypal, however, I didn't really have the money to invest during the month it took to get my money back.

I was ripped off on a couple of magazine subscriptions because the seller had tons of "engineered feedback" for a totally unrelated item: $1 emailed "cookbooks" that she'd created, and sold, in the weeks leading up to her magazine subscription scam. When I checked her FB, there were pages and pages of positive reviews for what I found out later were $1 cyberspace items...

Meanwhile, I was out a small chunk of change for a couple of multi-year subs to Smithsonian and NatGeo. The only thing that saved me back then was the fact that I'd paid by Visa...

As a Casual seller I find that sometimes people pay with echeck and don't realize they did it. Whenever I get a echeck I email the buyer that it will take time because we don't ship until cleared. As a buyer please be aware that if you pay with echeck most seller wont ship until funds clear. And please don't give us a low DSR for shipping time because of it.

Great article!

A WARNING ABOUT BUYING GIFT CARDS on eBay:

spend it as quickly as you can (less than 45 days after purchase). Snooze... or lose!

Verifying the balance is not enough. Some sellers request very boldly to leave feedback quickly - that should be a warning sign. Do not exchange the card with another gift card in the store, it is not safe either. If you want to keep the card ($), buy a merchandise then return it without receipt.

I've bought from sellers with immaculate feedback for a year or more, then one day, poof!... you can never tell from the seller's feedback.

I also had a gift card emptied 6 months after purchase, when there was nothing I could do about it - neither CC, eBay, nor paypal could help.

i have an item listed starting at 99¢ ... there are 2 bids. 2nd bid is newbie (aug 12, 10) from malaysia. should i cancel the bid and risk not getting a 2nd bidder or wait it out.
my auction says ships to US only (but it is not something that will actually ship) so there is no shipping or fee for shipping.

7 hours till end of auction.

I would like an opinion on an issue I have. I sold an ipod nano on eBay on the 23rd of October my listing stated no returns. The buyer contacted me tonight and said the item will not hold a charge. Should I tell the buyer to contact Apple or try going to an Apple Store? I have no idea what the buyer might have done to this item and I would rather not receive it back. Thanks for any assistance.

Also, the item was brand new purchased at Staples.

Unfortunately, if the buyer files SNAD dispute, eBay will inform the buyer to return it to you.

No returns in listing means nothing on eBay.

Chances are, the buyer will scam you by returning a broken or used ipod to you. Did you use generic photo of the ipod? If you didn't take actual photo of the ipod with serial number shown, it would be hard to prove that the buyer did a switcharoo on you...

Remember, return shipping is on the buyer and the buyer must show delivery confirmation.

Good luck

If you do sell an item make sure you have a tracking #. I sold two items overseas and thought that it I had proof I sent them I'd be covered. Even with a receipt from the P.O. I had to give money back and my item was gone also. Be careful.

Proof of shipment covers the seller against claims of unauthorized transactions, assuming all other requirements of the Seller Protection Policy are met. It does not cover sellers in other types of disputes, or those that do not qualify for SPP coverage.

Buyers:

Also insist your seller include a packing slip, do not let them walk all over you by not doing so.....
AND, a packing slip is not a printout of the eBay item page.
Paypal makes it very easy for a seller to print a packing slip.
So does eBay, but theirs is far less desirable......
