I'd like to try out eBay selling through wholesalers and see how it goes.
I understand that I need a state tax id first.
Since I just want to test things out, I wanted to start as a sole proprietor and apply for a
california sales tax id and an ein so I don't have to provide anyone my ssn (so for now no dba or llc).

Is there a detailed guide or book on how to apply for eBay sellers,
for example what to put for buisines location and Projected Monthly Taxable Sales fields?
Something like what TaxCut does for filing income taxes...

Would all this be manageable without a cpa?

thanks

I'd beware of "wholesalers" in general.
You can generally get a Tax ID in your state through a simple application process.
Same thing for establishing a business entity..

You need to detail your state.

Might try the state specific "legal" section of Craigslist for pointers.

You certainly don't need a CPA in my opinion...

So where to get products in sufficient quantity if not wholesalers?

Depends on what your talking about. If you mean wholesalers as in drop shipping there is pretty much no way you are going to make money. Others can always beat your prices... If you mean go out and get your own product made and sell that well you at least have a possibility of profits, but its by no means guaranteed.

Yes, I know most of those "dropshippers" charge more than Amazon, Newegg, etc.

Though to go back to my original question...
Should I leave blank the business location or put my home address and also, how would I estimate Projected Monthly Taxable Sales (here's the form I'm referring to boe400spa.pdf)?

thanks

You do not need a California sales tax ID.

If you get a California sales tax ID this information will be reported to your city and the IRS. Your city will send you a bill if you do not get a business license. The IRS will contact you if you do not file a Schedule C.
