I ordered some stuff from llbean.

llbean's web site already shows the following tracking information for my order:

"United States Postal Service"
Order Number: xxxxxx
Tracking Number: 91xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Carrier: USPS
Ship Date: 05/xx/2008
Shipping Service: SMARTPOST
Estimated Delivery Date: 05/xx+6/2008
Recipient: fatwallet member
Status: IN TRANSIT
Shipping Address:
123 any street
Some Town, State Code
Signed for by: blank obviously

Tracking Details
Date Scan Activity

05/xx+6/2008 xx:xx AM Estimated Delivery Date

05/xx+1/2008 xx:xx AM In Transit Sortation Center Departure

05/xx/2008 xx:xx PM Picked up PORTLAND ME

As you can see there are three entries already, yet usps.com shows nothing yet:

Label/Receipt Number: 91xx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xx
There is no record of this item.

I am wondering what kind of connectivity llbean has that they would somehow have tracking updates when the shipment itself isn't even reflected (found) yet on usps.com!
Has anyone else run into this?

Thanks!

Is it just "tracking" within LLbeans control, (their warehouse?)

1st line just says "estimated delivery date" I estimate the date when I ship too.
2nd line, "Sortation center" Sound like a warehouse where the item(s) are being packaged? Don't know.
3rd line, "Picked up Portland ME" -- Sounds like USPS finally picked up the package, and it's starting to travel.

But hard to tell how long each step is taking with all the XXXX's

Thanks Rhino.
That theory makes sense (i.e. that it is just the portion of the tracking they have control over).

XX is the date it was picked up from the warehouse.
e.g. 'XX + 1' in my tracking means 1 day after it was picked up.

Therefore the estimated delivery date (XX+6), via Smartpost, is 6 days after the shipment date.

SmartPost is basically a mail forwarding system. The shipper gives the packages to Smartpost, which delivers them to a USPS hub in the delivery area. The USPS takes the packages the last mile for delivery.

In theory, this kind of system can be faster than parcel post, and cheaper than real courier service (like FedEx ground).

I think that all of the tracking information given is from SmartPost; the USPS will only show delivery.

try tracking it through fedex.com they are the courier for it.

Dude, you do realize that Smartpost is not a company but a service? It's a bastard child of FedEx and USPS

1. SmartPost *was* a separate company until FedEx bought it.
2. What the hell does that have to do with anything?

1. Have no idea and don't care what it was, we talking about here and now
2. You're making incorrect statements, that's why I was politely trying to make you correct yourself.
3. Stop being a moron and just go around negging people for no good reason
