I got screwed on CL in a round about way. I have a truck and my bed is damaged. I found a bed 550 miles away from me, the same color. Emailed the guy, called the guy, made clear I wanted it...asked to send him a deposit.. nope, 'I'll give my word its yours and I would rather pay you all in cash when you get here' was his reply. I talked to him first last sunday, we have emailed back and forth about 6 times since. Since I first spoke with him, told him I would be there friday evening.

Well, took a day off work, paid some guys to take my bed off, one of them needed parts off of it so I gave it to him for 50 bucks. I built some plywood fenders so my cab does not get beat up, wired on some tailights, pricelined a hotel room about 200 miles from me (had a friend to stay with at the place I was going to get the bed).

Had emailed the guy once again that I would be there friday afternoon.

I take off, drive 200 miles, in my hotel room.... get an email saying he is sorry but his buddy wrecked his truck and the bed is no longer for sale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talk about being angry. Wrote him an email describing the situation I was now in; no reply back and avoids all phone calls.

Needless to say, its people like HIM that has made our country in such a mess today. No regard for anyone else... So, I spent about $200 bucks to drive 200 miles from my home, spend the night, and now I am back home... and now, I have NO bed (Called the guy that bought mine, he already cut it into two pieces!), and my truck has plywood fenders and tailights wired onto the frame... *sigh*

2 things....

1. you are helping our economy by pumping extra $200.00 into it (sorry couldnt help it and had to joke)
2. how is it that guys fault? he didnt know his buddy will wrech the truck

I would've made some sort of deal where I MADE SURE that NOTHING happens to the bed before I take off for his home...but yea, he screwed you. I'd drive out to his house (since I'm half way there already) just to kick his ass...but that's just me. Hey, I'd want SOMETHING for my $200.

...ok, I'm just kidding, but you get the point.

Yeah, I know there is not much to be done (I would not do this, not worth the hassle.. but my buddy swears I could recoup a couple hundred from small claims court. I have several documentation 'contracts' saying the bed IS mine (as far as my name is one it, its being sold to ME), telling me to come on, he will be there to pick it up, and then I have a later email saying its not 'broken countract' and money I occured b/c of the situation). If I was a d**k with nothing better to do, it would be fun to sue him over 200 bucks. I just thought it was quite a story of getting screwed indirectly and worthy of a post. I agree the guy did not know his buddy would wreck his truck.... however, I certainly think had I been in his shoes and I 'gave someone my word' that it was theirs... I would be hard pressed to back out. I would have called my buyer in person the second I knew, tried to reason with them and come up with happy terms...but we tend to be too nice.

In this case, it was a reply to the email saying sorry, my buddy wrecked his truck, the bed is no longer for sale! Avoiding phone calls and will not reply back... thats what I am saying is wrong with our world.

Shop closer to home.

No offense OP but you should be mad at yourself for willing to spend two days of your time & ~$250-300 chasing a Craigslist sale. Craigslist is fraught with flaky sellers & buyers, & the fact that the seller didn't want to take a deposit should've been your second clue. Be glad you only drove 400 miles round trip instead of 1,100 miles round trip.

The seller did not screw the OP. The situation screwed the OP. Do you think the seller wanted his truck to to get smashed up and loose out on a sale?

If the seller was truly a jerk, he would not have emailed the OP at all.

LOL. The bed was not yours, not in anyway. I'm sorry this happened to you, but its done. Get over it and move on. Lesson learned. Shop closer to home and don't count your chickens before they've have hatched.

I don't go farther than 5 miles to buy anything on craigslist, and all buyers come to me. too many garbage flakers on CL for me to waste my time otherwise. it only takes getting screwed once before you relaize it's the only way to do business. besides, as a buyer, 9 times out of ten I can score a better deal via FW anyway

Most of the new stuff on CL was bought just to be resold for profit.

All of the new stuff anywhere was bought just to be resold for a profit. Duh!

You learned several lessons:

1. A CL sale can't be relyed on until you've completed the exchange.
2. Don't do anything based on emails only. Your final contact should be over the phone once you're serious. (as a buyer and seller).
3. If you're buying don't wait. Make the purchase as soon as you can. CL deals tend to turn sour with time.

I bet you thought I was joking...

Um, around here it's illegal to drive without enclosed wheels or flaps.

That looks a tad bit dangerous, for you and everyone around.

(corrected typo)
