It's going to be the most confusing rebate fiasco considering all the wordings and piles of right/wrong info. Folks, let's put everything together in a single thread since we need to fight collectively.
Over the next few weeks I will be posting updates as I gather from different threads. In the mean time, please do post your experience/confusion/updates.

ruh-roh! i knew there was a reason why i didn't buy this printer and file the rebate. that and the 2-3 other laser printers that have been int he closet for 2 years.

10 printers arrived, working on rebate directly with HP supervisor for Quill order...

EDIT:
Ok, so I've been busting my butt to get somewhere with this, escalating my specific claim to the Young America (HP Rewards Rep) Team Management for this rebate, and escalating it further to the Account Management team for HP, and the HP Executives have made their final decision as of this afternoon to DENY ALL REBATES TO CONSUMERSfor ALL vendors that are operating in this manner. Ie: Quill, A matter of Max, Buy.com, etc. ALL OF THEM ARE DOING INSTANT REBATE'S FOR $50 DIRECT THROUGH HP UNLESS THEY'RE SOLD FOR ALMOST NEAR MSRP!!! THE DISTRIBUTORS ONLY HAVE A FEW $$ MARKDOWN ON THIS! I confirmed this with a level 5 TechData account.

I called Quill, spoke with a supervisor and asked for him to put me in contact with their HP salesperson because each authorized reseller has an HP rep and he refused to do so. They are standing by this, covering it up as much as they can and thinking we'll just simply go away. They would agree to pick up the printers after I wasted my time to box them back up, but that's it. I told him that's not good enough, what they did was fraud, changing their description around halfway through and not telling their customers they were filing rebates on their behalf and just wanted to "blame it on the online websites" for all of this misinformation. He actually had the audacity to tell me "deals this good are ridiculous, they simply don't happen". And I politely reminded him that they do quite often actually, especially with phased out printers, or when a company would rather make money on the toner/ink, or a software company wants to make money on the subscription so they'll give away a bunch free (Norton anyone? That's a quarterly hot deal is free software after rebate for them).

Since HP has made their decision then they will pay the consequences for allowing their authorized resellers to permit misleading advertising and either force them to make it right, or make it right themselves. Apparently this is not happening and HP has branded anyone trying to take advantage of this as fraudsters themselves when we did nothing wrong! This is very upsetting as HP usually has a strong customer service oriented viewpoint and it's obvious they're siding with the reseller's on this one.

HP has done a good job of keeping these key people quiet during this process as I was not able to make direct contact with them, but I did end up personally working with Young America's Team Manager for this specific rebate directly. It sounds like Young America's hands are tied, but they are the direct link to this rebate so it's best to keep pounding them. They're aware the crap hasn't hit the fan yet, it's only speculation, but now that there is a confirmed denial from the "boss" here it comes. Let the floodgates open. I already filed my chargeback with the CC company. Hold on tight everyone as it's going to be a rough ride!

I am in for the rebate for Quill purchase.

I jumped on just one for myself from Newegg, which I believe was the first deal posted here. Newegg's return policy is 15% restocking/30 days (ordered 6/01/07). I feel like we all should return these printers, but a) I hate to pay a restock fee of $12 and return shipping on an unopened item, which I am I am not alone there and b) Obviously many bought several of them to FeeBay that can't be returned.

At least we have a heads-up to follow the process of the rebate, but this might be difficult. All I have on my form is "Awards Center, 1-888-221-4126". And if we have to file a BBB complaint - or continue with a AGO complaint, who get's the complaint filed against them? The reseller (Newegg/quill/Omax/etc), HP or Young America?

Okay, who is really a lawyer here?????

And you would escalate this because... Thanks for your help... NOT!!

Please post the name and exact quote from the HP exec that claimed the rebates would be denied.

I don't see how HP can pull this off without alienating tons of consumers and retailers. Virtually everyone had these printers priced at about $80 at one time or another.

HP has a real mess on their hands but I'm afraid they have no choice but to honor the rebates.

The best advice to keep applying the pressure.

P.S. You're totally waisting your time with a cc dispute. There are no cc's that guarantee rebate fullfilments since rebates are totally seperate from the purchase transaction!!

Well as I warned you.. I received my official DENIED claim today, and they used the special pricing clause. It arrived via certified express mail. Now the real battle begins since it's official.

ilikebtmoney said: Well as I warned you.. I received my official DENIED claim today, and they used the special pricing clause. It arrived via certified express mail. Now the real battle begins since it's official.

Good luck. I think HP would loose in court. How's a reasonable and prudent consumer going to know what "special pricing" is since HP didn't adequately define it. HP designed the promotion and the burden was on them to spell it out on the rebate form T's and C's. (they should have simply specified a min. purchase price - it's done all the time). Ambiguous terms usually result in victory for the plaintiff.

I think the only rebates HP can legitimately deny are the ones from Quill for purchases after the Quill disclaimer was posted.

You know the drill:

bbb.org
ftc.gov
State attorney general
(do this for both HP and the reseller assuming the reseller hosted the rebate form).

The best we can do is pressure them through the channels you listed, their lawyers know that they can beat us to a pulp in a battle of attrition in court. Unless if something convinces them that we have a massive AND organized effort going on, they won't even worry about damages from a lawsuit.

Returned mine to the store with no problems.
I have no confidence in the fighting for the rebate.

The rebate was never posted on the retailer' site and the special
price clause, because of that they will say we tried to see a deal that wasnt there.
An easy win for HP.

Ok guys. Lets line up. We have a strong case and I believe we can win. There is sun shining on us already. Text
As mentioned by mistycoupon, his rebate status showed up as approved and he purchased it from Buy.com for 80 bucks. I bet nothing can stop us. HP CSR are just trying to scare us away from submitting the rebate. Probably the are just as confuse as us regarding the vocabs of the rebate lingo.

From http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=74&threadid=742653&newest=1#last,
RazelDazel called and confirmed:

RazelDazel said: Before I purchased this unit from CC, I called the Rebate center 800 number listed on the $64.50 rebate form. I specifically asked the agent if purchasing a printer from CC at a reduced price would qualify me for this rebate and the agent answered in the affirmative. I couched the question in a number of ways so as to make sure that what I was understanding was in fact what the agent was saying. I advised the agent that there was some concern as to the wording of the rebate but he assured me that purchasing the printer from CC at a reduced price of $79.99 would indeed qualify for the rebate if the paperwork , forms etc. were submitted as required. As verification of this reassurance, I received the agent's name and ID # and asked that my information, (name, address etc) be entered into the system as well. After checking with the supervisor as to how this could be done, he returned to the phone, reiterated all the information I have given him and he once again assured my that the purchase in question would qualify for the rebate.

There's little more than I can say or do at this point. I have purchased the unit and it is scheduled to be delivered on 7/3. I note this a.m. that CC has now raised it's price on the printer to $129. They say that timing is everything. We shall see. In this case.....no guts, no glory!

I did the same:
SkyShard said: I also called the number 1888-385-5410 and specifically confirmed that S096 was valid at CircuitCity at the reduced price. I spoke to Paola (#54534), and she took down my name and address.

Interestingly, she said that Bestbuy and Bestbuy.com, as well as Officemax were NOT valid for this rebate.

So... here goes!

Same here, I called rebate center for S096 at Buy.com back in June and they confirmed that rebate is valid even though dates on pdf were wrong at a time. By the time I received the printer from Buy.com S096 rebate form on HP web site had correct for me date window and I sent it in.

Update.

Just called rebate center and they didn't receive rebate papers from me yet. CSR confirmed that rebate is valid and asked to fax a copy of the rebate docs.

>>>>>>>>just got aproval email: "Your rebate check has been approved and will be mailed to you shortly."

Where did you buy your printer??

i had both the s096 El Paso TX form and the #2502 Norwood MN form. Since my copy of the s096 had the wrong valid dates I sent in the MN one. So am i SOL for this offer? My rebate hasn't shown up in the system yet. Bought from Amazon, don't think they were advertising with the rebate.

edit:
sent my form in very beginning of july

Just checked web-rebates.com and my rebate shows up:

Which rebate is valid, the El Paso or Norwood, MN rebate, if it shows up at web-rebates?

I purchased the HP 1018 printer on June 28 and submitted the two rebates, one to to El Paso, TX, and one to Norwood, MN. I have a valid HP rebate at www.web-rebates.com.

In my case, the one sent to El Paso, TX showed up on web-rebates.com, offer S096. Actually, my check had been mailed as of yesterday.

Thanks. My rebate at web-rebates also shows the offer number S096. The HP rebate for El Paso lists the S096 offer number.

Does anybody know where to check the rebate status for the Norwood, MN rebate?

norwood MN has no web address on the form, only phone number
888-221-4126

Are there any others whose rebate doesn't even show up on the website as received? I'm not sure if I should call or just wait a little longer.

Mine hasn't showed up, yet I know it was received -- sent mine certified on 6/20.

Daddio1949 said: Does anybody know where to check the rebate status for the Norwood, MN rebate?

I called the number on the Norwood, MN rebate form, but it seems this call center has the same data as the web-rebate.com site, and the CSR I spoke with said that only one rebate was valid per purchase. She could not find any record of a rebate that I submitted with the Norwood offer code.

I just called to check the status of my rebate, and the woman advised me that they were backlogged at least two weeks for that offer number... I guess that's better than hearing I was denied!

My status shows check mailed. submitted S096 on 7th july. Pretty quick.Bought from Buy.com on June 5.

Ibtoken2002, did you send the rebates to a PO Box address? I didn't know mail could be certified if addressed to a PO Box.

I checked my status hereand it just came up today.

I bought from Buy.com June 4 i think.

Both of mine are now showing...
I bought one from Amazon and one from Staples.

Fixed Link for HP Status Lookup

My submission for offer 2502 (i.e. the Norwood, MN offer) finally showed up on web-rebates.com today. Apparently they received it on 6/20 but it just got into the system today... It's at step 2 so we'll see how it goes.

edit: Some background info, bought the printer on WalMart.com for $80.

Daddio1949 said: Which rebate is valid, the El Paso or Norwood, MN rebate, if it shows up at web-rebates?
Rebate Form: 2502
Purchased From: CircuitCity.com
Rebate mailed on: 06/09/2007

My "parents" rebate is listed:
Paid amount: 64.50
Error(s): None

My rebate is listed:
Error(s): duplicate serial number

I will call on Monday to see what is what. The serial number on my rebate submission matches the serial number on the box I have. And yes, the two submissions have different serial numbers on them (I just checked).

funktuna said: Are there any others whose rebate doesn't even show up on the website as received? I'm not sure if I should call or just wait a little longer.

Nothing for me. Mine came from Newegg, Offer #2502 in Norwood.

Meaning the deal the of the $50 Instant rebate automatically voids the rebate, ilikebtmoney said: Ie: Quill, A matter of Max, Buy.com, etc. ALL OF THEM ARE DOING INSTANT REBATE'S FOR $50 DIRECT THROUGH HP UNLESS THEY'RE SOLD FOR ALMOST NEAR MSRP!!! Second because you voluntarily agreed to to the terms and conditions upon applying for said rebate, THEY DO have the right to do as they wish, even if they wish to not pay for no reason. Also meaning when you said ilikebtmoney said: the Account Management team for HP, and the HP Executives have made their final decision as of this afternoon to DENY ALL REBATES TO CONSUMERSfor ALL vendors that are operating in this manner. They had the right to do so.

But define "instant rebate" to sale price. The term instant rebate has become a buzzword that looks good, but makes for a loophole. When I bought mine for example, there was no "instant rebate". It was simply on sale.

HP reserves the right to modify or withdraw this promotion at any time.

This means they can pull the rebate promotion at any time. If they orignally had it slated for 3 months, they can pull it at 1 month if they want to. It's just a "cover your butt" clause in the event that they made an error, or error in judgement on a promotion. BUT if a buyer makes a purchase within the period the rebate was valid, the company is not off the hook for fulfilling their end of the contract.
