I went to Home depot to purchase a washer and dryer and noticed that they were running a promotion that stated "receive up to a $250 gift card" for energy star qualified appliances. After looking at the washers, I decided to buy one from home depot motivated by the gift card. The sales associate gave me a rebate form (rebate form was sitting next to the washer I purchased) and said fill this out, mail it with paperwork (they even gave me a second copy to submit!!) and you should receive your gift card. Well I submitted everything and just recently received a letter from the rebate center stating that my purchase did not qualify because it was not on the "qualified appliance" list. After inquiring about this "qualified appliance" list, I found out that it is in fact not accessible by customers, let alone accessible at the time of purchase. According to the rebate center "your store should know which appliances qualify, they have the list". Well the person I purchased it from TOLD ME THAT MY APPLIANCE DID QUALIFY. So where is my rebate..not to be found. The Home Depot Rebate center refuses to honor the rebate and they tell me that there is no one else I can speak to about the matter. I now believe that the "list" does not exist and it is a bait and switch tactic to get you into the store and buy appliances from them.

I just filed a complaint with the BBB.

Try talking to someone at the store too.

2 stores I hate, BB & HD.
I would return the washer and dryer.

I second that. Return the items and make it clear to the manager why they are being returned. Return it even if they promise to give you the value of the rebate to you.

I may have been snagged by this little deception as well. I say "may" because I'm still waiting to speak with the appliance dept mgr who was on vacation when I went to the store last week.

In my case the energy star appliance was/is a refridgerator. In my case, the refridge I purchased(predicated on the rebate)is not only Energy Star certified, but was rated like %10 more efficent than other models in the same catgeory- in other words, the model I bought exceed the efficientcy rating for all other models in it's group. Even if HD does have a secret list, how the H E L L would this model NOT be on it ?

I'm so frick'in angry - HD has lost all my bu$ine$$ and good will. I'm trying to remain calm till I have heard what the local dept mgr has to say, but really it's the principle now and even if I get what I feel I'm entitled to, it's bad blood between me and HD.

Has anyone out there ever actually filed a Small Claims court action based on a rebate renege (from any where)?

Not like anybody cares or anything but ....

I finally got to speak with the Appliance Dept Manager (at least over the phone). She acted as if it was no problem to credit my account for the amount of the Gift Card in question. So I visited HD over the weekend, was sent to the customer service dept, and got my card credited - okeey-doekey.

I will however, in my future buying decisions, avoid any rebates associated with HD.

Now I have to see about my $55 delivery rebate that's been denied and then re-processed and is now still processing- its complicated, I won't boor you. Suffice it to say Home Depot needs a remodeling of their business practices and customer service.
