Is allrebates is lying?
Just read THIS story!
I purchased two Mustek video recorders last fall (late September and early Oct) from Radio Shack with mail-in rebates handled by allrebates. I followed the instructions *very carefully* given that I have had problems with mail-in rebates before. The procedure required me to send in three things: the receipt, the mail-in rebate form and the UPC code from the box. I actually sat down with an *assistant* to make sure the procedure was followed correctly.
I purchased another Mustek video recorder several days later and followed the same procedure.
6 weeks or so went by and I had heard nothing. I contacted allrebates. They said to wait - it can take more time. January rolls around and I went to Radio Shack to voice my concerns. We could not get anyone from Allrebates on the phone but the store manager faxed proof of purchase to the allrebates fax number along with a request for the rebate just in case.
Today I revisited the issue again (having heard nothing). I called allrebates and ultimately demanded to speak to a supervisor - having been given the run around for months and again today. He first quickly tried to turn it around on me and asked why *I* waited so long to respond! Now I'm angry. I insist on an answer as to what is going on. First he claims that they do not have the sales receipts but when I press him and tell him that I have *copies* of everything that was sent in -including the sales receipts- he suddenly qualifies the statement by saying what he really means is that my sales slip information is "invalid according to his system"; that is what he meant when he said they did not "have" my sales slip(s).
So lets look at the nut of this thing: the sales slips that I sent in were "invalid" according to his system. Standard Radio Shack receipts. But it gets worse. I ask if they still *have* what I sent in so it can be checked. The answer is no. "we only keep claim materials for 21 days" I am told. If I resend the copies now will they pay the rebate? I cannot get a straight answer other than that the receipts must be "valid" according to his system. This is called arbitrary. This is called bargaining in bad faith.
It's clear allrebates had no intention of honoring this rebate. Their ultimate response has been an arbitrary "your receipt was not valid according to our system" and your copies may not be either. This is disingenuous.
I'm pretty certain that if this happened to me it has happened to others. I'm not the only one.
I suspect that allrebates is cheating many folks so they can keep more of the money for themselves. I suspect that is the way it's set up. I see from scanning this thread that a common theme: allrebates claiming not to have a sales receipt. I'd also suspect that they fall back on the arbitrary "your receipt was not valid" in 9 cases out of 10 if/when pressed. Knowing corporate America as I do I'll bet they have internal numbers/goals they try to meet and have the ability to simply declare the correct number of claims "invalid" if need be to make those numbers.
This company needs to be sued. They need an Attorney General or three on them.
