Watch this video.

So what do you think will be the best protection for this kind of technology?

Don't use RFID quick pay methods. That simple. I carry multiple cards in my card and the guys in this video could rub all of themselves over my back pocket and still get nothing.

a homemade sleeve of aluminum foil....or just punch anyone getting that close to your personal regions

Interesting, it used to be that they couldn't skim the number but it appears to have changed.
Good think the OUTSIDE of my wallet is shielded. I just open it to use the RFID inside.

Phishing is not that easy. Use virtual keyboard and use Firefox's private browsing. That should probably keep you safe unless you claim a lottery, which you did not buy a ticket for.

Silly, journalist hype. Nothing was stolen from the consumer. All US credit cards provide 100% protection from false charges.

Best protection is user credit, not debit card

The credit card companies cover it via fees to the merchants or higher interest rates. So either businesses that accept credit cards pay for it (and may end up raising prices because of it, like many gas stations do) or people who can't afford low interest rate cards pay for it.

So, in the end, one way or another, we still pay for it.

minidrag - true - and there are ways to prevent this. My main gripe is with the sky is falling on the consumer tone of the article. There is no direct consumer issue, especially with credit cards

True, it is indirect. My point (and gripe) is with the way so many people blow off this kind of thing because the consumer doesn't have to pay. There seems to be a lot of 'it doesn't matter, they can steal all they want, the consumer doesn't pay' attitude out there and that bothers me. As a consumer it bothers me because I know that while indirect I do still pay.

As a business owner it bothers me for two reasons:

1) If a bad card is used at my shop I am screwed - I'm out the money, no credit card company is going to credit me for it
2) I do pay, each time I swipe a card, to cover fraud. My merchant expenses continue to climb, and covering fraud is a big reason for it

I realize that's not what you were talking about, but what you said just struck a nerve with me.
