I cannot choose between the two. With windows 8 around the corner, I think it might not be a bad idea to wait. Have you used utrabooks? How are they different?

I'll vote for Laptop. Laptop would be more useful than an IPad. It is my opinion. It depends on all your needs.

Browsing, basic photo editing and video conversions.
P.S. FIFA 12 would be a bonus. So, I have made my mind as I am not willing to compromise on FIFA 12.

Laptop will provide a lot more flexibility for photo editing and video conversion.

We don't even know the budget OP is working with here. May be TI89 is the solution.

Laptop would be more useful than an IPad. Ipads are great but when Apple releases a new version of it. It becomes obsolete. Laptops can be upgraded. It is just my opinion. It depends on your need and lifestyle. Just make the right choice. Look for the one that would have a long term benefit.

And is able to easily accept input. Personally I find it time consuming to enter more than a few characters into the IPAD

Laptop. If you get a tablet, which you shouldn't, then get an iPad. If you get an iPad, which you shouldn't, then get an iPad2.

I vote for the laptop.
When you're in deep with video conversions, definitely a laptop is better. You'll run out of storage space on the iPad. Yeah there's the cloud but try storing videos on the cloud and you might spend your time watching upload progress bars rather than working on your videos. Also you can play better games on the laptop instead of the washy-wishy sports games on the iPad.

No doubt iPad is latest approach of doing things, but it can't take place of Laptop for its support in variety of projects. That's all!

I vote Laptop as well. Huge Apple guy, but for what you're trying to do - you need an full fledged computer.

ipad, Laptop or SURFACE?

rocky, ipad, android, or surface are VERY limited in capability and cannot be compared to a laptop. Not even close. Like comparing a vespa to a harley.
surface seems pretty nice, but it is by and large still a new device and everything in it's first generation is pretty iffy. It's capability will probably surpass the CURRENT gen ipad, but by the time surface is in broad deployment, ipad will have at least two new generations.
If considereing ipad or android, it should be as a SUPPLIMENT to your existing computer, NOT a replacement. I like mine very much but it is NO substitute. IF you can afford an ipad AND a laptop, I'd lean towards getting a 32G ipad over an android, but only slightly.

surface will probably have enough power and usability for most mobile business users. I think it will do well. The big hurdle is that tablet app developers know how to program for ios and are very familiar with it.
I'd also lean towards the iPad for a simple tablet. The lack of flash support is still a big concern, though. For smartphones, I would recommend the Android.

I believe surface has arrived just to change the way Tablets work. With closed OS and touch keyboard, ipad is not the best tablet.
