Should I wipe the drive before installing win7?

I'm thinking the format from the disk would be fine.

Formatting is fine. The only reason to wipe is if you want to make sure data can't be recovered.

That's what I figured but was unsure...

That's not what he said. There's a difference between a simple win format and wiping the drive 3-7+ times.

I think ellory was tired when he read my post.

On another note, there is no real reason to wipe a drive more than once.

Let's go with that. Either that or I can't read

Unless you have a bad sector that the hard drives firmware is not allowing to be tagged as "bad"

as an unrelated note....always make a backup of the original image on the computer before installing a completely new one

Not sure I'm following you on this one... Why would that mean you should wipe the drive with more than on pass?

Huh? The only real reason you would wipe a drive over a simple format is security, and a one-pass wipe is insane if you are going to the trouble of running a wipe. In most cases a wipe isn't really necessary, but if you are going to go to the trouble of doing it, do it right.

Everything I've seen in the last few years says more than one pass is a waste of time. Here's one link, but there are lots more out there.

This article is a good one too, as the author actually tried to read a single-pass wiped drive using magnetic force microscopy:
