I use Thunderbird for Charter eMail, POP not web based I keep getting a small boxed pop up asking if I want to compact it... Please what does that mean?

To paraphrase, compacting email is a clanup activity that compresses your local mail store. It is done to reduce space on your local computer. Most off-line email progs offer a compact messages option to reduce the size of the mail store on your local machine. Basically compacting email performs cleanup operating that among other tasks it removes all the previously deleted emails in your mail store. In addition it removes whitespace from archived emails messages.

Or, to put it the way I usually explain it to my non-computer literate customers... It removes some junk, making your email files smaller and (theoretically) faster.
