What are some good quality, reliable, easy to use, plug and play style region free DVD players available in the United States that can play all region DVDs as well as PAL? I keep reading mixed reviews of region free DVD players and their compatibility. Furthermore, I also see DVD players that are identical to models sold in popular regular U.S. brick and mortar stores, but which say region free on them and are for sale by stores that specialize in region free DVD players. For example, the Samsung DVD-E360 sells at Wal-Mart for $29.99, while the "region free" version sells for a lot more in stores that specialize in region free DVD players. Both are the same model number it seems. Has the "region free" one been modified somehow by the seller, hence the higher price, that only certain vendors know how to do or have the authorization to do?

Member Summary

The Samsung DVD-E360 sold at WalMart is region locked. As you supposed, the retailers listing region-free versions have modified their players to be region-free. That said, usually the modification process is simply entering a specific sequence on the DVD player's remote control.

For example, from looking up that player at ellory's 2nd link:

So save yourself the money and buy the WalMart version and apply the hack yourself.

Thanks for the tip. Do you think this player will also play PAL DVD's?

If you're in the US, what's important to know is not whether it will play PAL (it could output the DVD in PAL, which most US TV's can't accept), but whether it converts PAL DVDs to NTSC so that it will show up on US TVs.

This site claims that the player has a "Built-in PAL to NTSC Converter":

The best part is if you buy it locally from WalMart, you can return it if it doesn't work.
