I LOVE this threat. Just fix several hundreds of problems in my computer! There should be an evaluation tool for this threat. |

FYI - There is a new version of Adaware (Ad-Aware Personal edition) out at lavasoftusa.com's web site. It found some cookies and html links on my PC that the old version ( 6.181) did not preveiously find. |

I found this site a couple of years ago after Leo on Tech TV talked about it.
This guy is smart...........

Will answer your Windows questions without alot of BS. Was able to turn off many of Windows "services" after spending some time reading his recommendations.
His article I just read while getting the link said that Windows took 3 years to get to "default" what took him 1 month 3 years ago with the new XP2 upgrade to make your computer a little more secure.

speaking of keeping computers up to date, XP users be very wary when installing SP2 - I have a few clients who have had their systems completely screwed up after installing Microsoft's new service pack. Make sure to create a restore point before installing it (that is if you feel there's some sort of great benefit to installing it). Also remember that it can be unsinstalled through add/remove, but this does not always fully undo an operating system update. |

I keep hearing about problems, but I personally haven't seen any.
I've now done 20 PCs that I personally manage, with absolutely zero problems
Of course, I am spyware and virus free before I begin |

Yeah, same thing here, I keep hearing about all kinds of problems with SP2. I've updated about 4 and they have gone through with no problem. However I am participating on another board -non computer oriented, where 75% of the members had a fowled system after installing SP2.
(Of course if they would only make a GHost/Acronis restore disk or just set a restore point before such a major change they could avoid disaster.) |

"This software is the customization software that you developed aiming at a handle reaching it at the time if itchy how a handle does not reach by a Windows standard function. Because Madonote sets various setting to registry of Windows, this software is not resident on the memory top. You can change the hidden various setting that you cannot change in a Windows standard function."

Or, if they ensured their system was spyware/virus free before they started |

Some tried - Some not. Like spybot. Not crazy with the free ver. of adware
Didn't see on your list - spyware doctor. Has a free ver. but in that it doesn't remove/just locates. Easy enough though - just C/P into a registry search to locate then delete. Be Sure To Backup Registry Prior To Making Changes
Have used AVG K but had initial problems with network PCPitStop dot com - Like the site
Going to check out the rest in this post.
Thanks for your effort OP |

For spyware and other parasites, you should reading the article in the second thread, not this thread.
The second thread which I wrote deals specifically with the removal of spyware and other parasites along with means of prevention.
The third thread, (this thread) mostly deals with sytem maintenance and useful tools for such. This thread is no longer maintained as the OP has not bothered to keep it updated.
BTW......
You mention adaware.....
This particular program is what is known as a rogue program and is not to be trusted.
The real program is Ad-Aware (note the dash in the name)
The only difference between the free version and the paid for version of Ad-Aware is you can integrate it with the shell so that you can perform a scan from the right click context menu in Windows Explorer along with a few other minor conveniences. But they both perform the same whehter you use the free version or the paid for version.

I'm sure the poster mean't Ad-Aware by Lavasoft DL. I wish people would speak clearly so that we can understand each other. Having to interpret is a pain.
Then again maybe the poster did install that renagade app you mentioned. |

I disagree with AVG being the "best" freeware AV. In fact, I think it's being discontinued. People should check out FreeAV. It really is one of, if not THE, best free AV utils out there.

Paid version also lets you scan across the network, and scan remote machines. Free version does not. |
